“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” May the battle begin between two godlike warriors, from the Anglo Saxons Dark Ages to the Ancient Greeks. Epic poems like The Illiad by Homer and Beowulf displays heroism in various traits. Whether it be the Dark Ages or Ancient Greek they too stood to act upon what they felt was right. Beowulf & Achilles have many similarities; they are great fighters in high positions.
Hubris is one of the many themes that were brought up in the Iliad. Its definition is extreme pride and arrogance shown by a person that will bring downfall to that person or to others. The first time this theme is brought up is when Helen leaves with Paris. Agamemnon uses Helen as an excuse to rile up all the Greek kings. Agamemnon knew that if they beat Troy, then he would control a major passage of trade which would make him the undisputed ruler of all of Greece.
The qualities that heroes should have are smarts so they can get out of tough situations such as if the villain traps them in a bind. The other thing they need to be cunning to use their skills to escape or evade their enemies. They should be fearless because if they're not fearless they might die because they would freeze up from the fear. Also they need to be strong physically and mentally if they're not strong they couldn't get out of difficult situations. Odysseus is not a typical hero because he’s unfaithful to his wife, he’s arrogant, and he puts his crew in terrible situations where most of them will die, though he still has all the qualities a hero should possess.
The Iliad by Homer The Iliad was a really good representation of the chaotic war-torn times of the area surrounding the Mediterranean Sea; this includes the countries Rome and Greece. It was a time where nations were trying to expand their power and influence and warriors were claiming their spoils of war. I mean the beginning of book I of The Iliad, Achilles and Agamemnon are arguing over the rewards and the spoils of war. Agamemnon didn’t want to give up his prize girl Chryses in order to please the God Apollo and stop the plague and the rain of arrow falling from Olympus.
Nicole Tschida ENG 210 Paper 1 2-26-18 The Iliad and The Consequences of War The plot of the Iliad takes place in the middle of the war between the Greeks and the Trojans that lasted for ten years. This conflict according to Homer and ancient Greek mythology occurred because the Trojan prince Paris abducted Helen, the wife of Menelaus, brother to king Agamemnon. In this paper, I will be examining the consequences of war, as outlined by Homer.
The poem does agree with Sarpedon that winning glory and honor is the greatest human achievement because regardless of what each character says they are fighting for, they are deep down really trying to obtain glory and honor. Throughout the poem the Iliad of homer there are several characters that are fighting for different reasons like vengeance, to protect their loved ones, or simply to gain honor through warfare, though each reason is different they all end up being about ones honor. Achilleus in the end of the poem is fighting to avenge Patroklos, who was killed by Hektor, so he goes on a rampage killing multitudes of Trojans in search for the prince of Troy, achieving a glory in the eyes of the Achaians. It describes the main events in the final weeks of the Trojan War and the Greek siege of the city of Troy. The wrath of Achilles, themes of glory and fate are portrayed in the subject matter of the epic.
These abilities are important as a warrior because both his men and the hero reflect and are influenced by them. Some of the abilities are excellence in war, courage, leadership and fighting qualities. These qualities are seen through the heroic characters Hector and Achilles. When Achilles is not present with his men, the Greeks are well defeated by the Trojans with no motivation or support. Achilles is also described by his men as a power figure when the poem says “These were his words,/ and all Achaeans gave a roar of joy/ to hear the Prince abjure his rage.”
In the epic poem, the Iliad written by Homer, several characters taking part in the warfare between the Achaeans and the Trojans are portrayed as embodying the heroic code of courage, physical strength, leadership, arete of value of honour, and the acceptance of fate. The heroic code is illustrated by the actions of the Trojan prince, Hector and the Achaeans strongest warrior, Achilles. Both of these characters display the Greek’s image of a hero, and can also let the reader discern what the society admires, looks up to and aspires to in its heroes. There are also characters who fail to be heroic, such as the Trojan “vivid and beautiful” prince, Paris. These characters in the Iliad illustrate the qualities that Ancient Greek society values.
Life’s a Drag There are various cultural and religious rituals within the dense book and classic of The Iliad, riddled with hints and motifs, communicating with the gods by offerings and looking for divination, along with sacrificial settings and prayers, letting us catch a glimpse into the Greek and Roman ceremonies during the times before, in the midst, and after the war. These epics, which we still read today, help us understand how these armies strategized, and how they took on the burden of war. War at that time was a time of respect for the death of the men upon your side of war, even so that there were so many casualties that a day was taken off to gather and burn these bodies, or return to the Roman soldiers’ families.

He is considered to be this because he is a heroic and honorable man that has been through many trials and gotten passed them all alive. He is a well-known hero throughout the world. Odysseus qualifies to be the ideal epic hero in all of the categories. For one he was born of royalty. For two he has a special weapon-his brain.

Among all the episodes of the Trojan War, Homer chooses the moment of Achilles’ wrath and thus creates a poem in which he becomes the central figure. From the Ancient Greeks’ point of view, Achilles represents the ideal of manliness and pure heroism, for he is brave and fights for heroics, not profits. Today, one can agree with this interpretation, yet Achilles is probably the most controversial character because he combines various personality traits and acts in accordance with his ambiguous nature.
