In the early 1600's when the first Americans arrived, known as Europeans, they brought with them an abundance of supplies and experience, these include horses, crops, cattle, tools, and technology like the compass. These are the positive aspects that Europeans had on American culture. On the other hand, the main negative effect that Europeans brought along with them to America were their diseases. Most of the first Americans died within the first year of European settlement.
The United States experienced an influx of immigrants between the 1890’s to the 1920’s. Immigrants entered the United States from Eastern Europe and Southern Europe. From these demographic shifts we can also see that there were changed in the United States attitudes towards recent immigrants. These attitudes are grounded in racialized notions of foreign peoples and African Americans. Nativist notions are set in ideas of whiteness and different factors make Eastern Europe and Southern Europe immigrants not quite white.
Intimate Colonialism is when the government tried to set up a policy that would encourage Indian Service staff members to intermarry with Native Americans. During the late 19th century, immigration was rising and the big thing in this era was assimilation. Assimilation is integrating people to be accustomed to the United States culture, behavior, value and norms. Though Native Americans have lived in America longer than anyone, the federal government thought that instead of ostracizing them for wanting to value their traditional culture, they created an assimilation policy for Native Americans. “The government’s assimilation policy sought to destroy Native nations’ cultural and political identities by replacing them with Anglo – American norms of behavior (108).”
For many new immigrants coming to America, it is difficult to adjust into the new society. Many come to America without the basic knowledge of English, the new immigrants do not have the ability assimilate to American society because of the lack of possible communication between the immigrant and an native. Non-English speaking immigrants that come to America face harsh challenges when trying to assimilate to U.S. society because immigrants are often segregated into ethnic communities away from natives, Americans do not know basics of words of other well known languages, and the lack of government funding education programs. Protests and riots breaking out denying the reality that Trump had won and many threats by some Pro-Trump saying inappropriate racial slurs and many telling non whites to ‘get out of their town/city or else.’ Throughout the years, the United States has been called the land of opportunity, leading to a high immigration rate in the late 1800s. Many foreigners came to the US feeling they would be accepted and allowed a new life. The reality being that they were received poorly and had mountiful acts of racism, both within the law and the populace, thrown upon them.

“One of the greatest glories of the public school was its success in Americanizing immigrants” Christakis quoted Ravitch in paragraph 20 is what surprised me because I have never heard of this concept before. Personally, I believe that would depend on the student. For example, one of my friends is from the Democratic Republic of Congo (Africa) and at first she was not really Americanized, like she did not use slang, she was not procrastinating. But, as time went on she made more American friends and became accustomed to America that was when she did start using slang and procrastinating. I agree with Christakis when she said “public schools also provide students with crucial exposure to people of different backgrounds and perspectives.”

The war that was thought to last a couple weeks ended up lasting 4 years and created huge conflict. Before World War I, Europe had created alliances for a balance of power between the nations. These alliances were meant to stop Europe from going to war by protecting their allies, but, it still couldn’t deter World War I from occurring (Yeo). The most significant cause of World War I was the alliance system because it caused countries to help their allies which escalated the conflict.

In Economic and Social Impact of Immigrants Stephen Moore is arguing that immigrants and refugees contribute positively to the American Economy. He conveys this through the use of surveys, data, and facts from multiple sources. In the second paragraph he took a 1986 survey that concluded that a lot of foreigners achieved success in this country in difficult positions such as engineering and entrepreneurship.
