Manufacturing on the Burnett River must be stopped! By Safi Hossain The Burnett River is very important to the Burnett region’s ecosystem. The Burnett River was named after James Charles Burnett in 1847, as he was the first European to discover it. The river starts below the Burnett Range and at The Great Dividing Range. The river is four hundred and twenty-five kilometers long, passing through four tributaries, four cities, and one reservoir. The river goes south across the mountainous biomes of Queensland and meets with the first city, Eidsvold. The rivers continue south then east where the river meets the second city, Mundubbera. If manufacturing continues on the Burnett River, the farming of fresh crops will slowly diminish as is already evident. QLD has as of now lost ten million hectares of good farming land to foreign manufacturing companies and this will continue. For example, we have a British rum factory and a German plaster board company on the banks of this important natural resource. Bundaberg’s fresh crops of sugarcane, ginger, lychees, sweet potatoes and mangoes which grow on the Burnett River increases the areas economy as we distribute the produce all over the country. The fresh food that we have access to is better for us as it is cheaper, but this could all stop if manufacturing continues. Companies are known to pump chemicals into farming land’s water sources, in this case, the Burnett River. Imagine this scenario, Manufacturing on the Burnett River continues and farmers lose land. The Burnett River becomes enclosed by buildings. Local production stops and no fresh produce is being farmed, as it is being imported. There is no longer any fresh food all you have access to imported produce. Bundaberg slowly loses economy and the Burnett River is no longer of use. Do you want this future? Many companies on the Burnett River are pumping chemicals such as E.Coli into the water. This chemical is very harmful to all life including humans. A type of E.Coli can give your kidney failure which is hemolytic uremic syndrome. In 1990, people died to the diseases at a restaurant in China in addition to this E.Coli is not the only chemical being pumped into the Burnett River. Nitrate which one nitrogen and three oxygen, is being pumped into the water by many companies. Nitrate leads to severe chest pain and chest pressure. What if manufacturing continues and waters become more polluted? The Burnett River would most likely become a very detrimental place to go. The Burnett River will no longer be. If manufacturing has a huge negative effect on the Burnett River, by pumping chemicals, what else are they
