The East Los Angeles School walkouts and Chicano Moratorium are forms of Chicana and Chicano resistance that have been examined in varied ways through mediums such as the Los Angeles Times and La Raza. In what is now termed the Chicano Blowouts, the East Los Angeles School walkouts of 1968 were led by more than 10,000 Chicana and Chicano students who demanded equal access to quality education. The Chicano Moratorium, on the other hand, occurred in 1970, and while it was intended to be a peaceful demonstration to protest the Vietnam war, it unexpectedly transformed into a display of police brutality that left several marchers dead. • This article discusses the Los Angeles riots and discusses the long term economic impact that they had on the city. • Victor Matheson is a professor in accounting and economics at the College of the Holy Cross. Robert Baade is also a professor of economics at Lake Forest College. Both professors possess the knowledge of economics and provide credible information on how events like riots can affect an economy. • I will use this journal article to help explain how the riots affected not only the awareness of police brutality and hate crimes, but also how it affected the entire economy of Los Angeles.
Shortly after the United States declared war on the German Empire in the spring of 1917, the War Department rushed to construct two new military installations in Harris County, Texas — Camp Logan and Ellington Field. As the war was progressing abroad, our own war was taking place here in Houston. On July 27, 1917, the Army ordered the Third Battalion of the Twenty-fourth United States Infantry Regiment to Houston to guard the Camp Logan construction site. The regiment traveled to Houston by train from their camp at Columbus, New Mexico, accompanied by seven white commissioned officers. The Camp Logan riot began the evening of August 23, when 156 angry soldiers stole weapons from the camp depot and marched on the city of Houston.
The film District 9 was directed by Neil Blomkamp and released in 2009. The main actors in the film were Sharlto Copley who portrays Wikus Merwe and Jason Cope who portrays Christopher Johnson. The film is meant to depict the life of an extraterrestrial race that was forced to stay on earth in deteriorated conditions, while also facing discriminatory treatment from humans. Thus, District 9 demonstrates racism through the aliens, the process of dissociation of Wikus as a human, and how the director intended to humanize the aliens to the audience.
In the play A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry introduces a family trying to move up in the world but has trouble doing so because they are racially opposed by society. Starting in the 1890’s the Jim Crow Laws were used in the South as a way to oppose African-American giving them a status called, “separate but equal.” They mandated segregation of public schools, public transportation, public facilities including restaurants, bathrooms, and drinking fountains. In the 1950s African- Americans were starting to fight for equal rights and were starting to make headway.
Rural areas make up a wide range of non-Hispanic, whites in America accounting for 80 percent of residents. Mexicans account for 9 percent, African Americans 8 percent, and Native Americans make up the last 2 percent of the rural area population (Housing Council, 2012, pg. 1). Granting rural areas are becoming diverse and there is an up rise in statistics of non-whites who relocate to rural areas, discrimination still existence. December the 6th, 1865 marks the end of slavery and white supremacy. A glance at the 21st century America manifests otherwise. Racism is an ongoing issue that contributes largely to class boundaries within significant aspects such as economy, education and society of the United States, making people of color inferior to white people. The key components that construct a country into greatness are economy, education and society. The inequality and injustice present in these interlinked components, bound by social class hierarchy, can lead to desisting the full potential to be a globally respectable nation.
In making the genuine picture of racism, Wright, portrayed his mistake when he saw the vessel they were to board when setting out with his mom to Memphis. 'For a considerable length of time I had envisioned about an enormous white pontoon skimming on a tremendous waterway, however when my mom brought me down to the levee upon the arrival of leaving, I saw a minor, grimy vessel that was not under any condition like the watercraft I had envisioned'. Also, to additionally paint the photo of the ghetto in which the blacks live, he portrayed their home in Memphis and its condition: In Memphis we live in a one – story block apartment. The stone structures and the solid asphalts looked depressing and threatening to me.
Very few people know that Oregon is a very racist state, and has created multiple laws in order to keep the state as white as it possibly can. One way of doing that was when Oregon first became a state and immigrants were coming to lie here for new opportunities, Oregon only allowed those who could assimilate to American ways and considered more desirable races over the undesirable races. Such as anyone from Germany or Scandinavia because anyone from those areas was viewed as the “self-image of Americans and Oregonians.” In Oregon, there have been similar views on immigrants of that are Asian and Latino, such as both are considered economical threats for different reasons.
The color of a person 's skin does not affect anyone according to many citizens in an Ohio town. In Longtown, Ohio, people are growing up with people of different races and were taught that a person 's color or appearance did not matter. Longtown has a history and has been recognized for giving job opportunities to not only white, but to black people too. No matter what a persons race is, they should be respected anywhere and everywhere. Longtown, Ohio is a great example of this.
The Los Angeles riots began on April 29, 1992. The riots started because four white police officers beat Rodney King, an African American. Rodney had been pulled over by police after an eight-mile chase and then refused to get to the ground. A man had videotaped the scene and it was broadcasted in the United States (Wallenfeldt). Jeff Wallenfeldt, the author of the article published on Britannica, wrote, “Although many Angelenos in the late 20th century prided themselves on their city’s ethnic diversity, there was a strong feeling on Los Angeles’s minority communities that the city’s predominantly white police force practiced racial profiling and engaged in racist brutality against African Americans and Hispanics” (Wallenfeldt).
We can stop racism in the bay area if the community comes together and works together to put a stop to it. If were all equal as 1 then there won't be any more racism. Bringing the community together as in the whole bay area would be a hard thing to do but easiest way to end racism in the bay. The bay all has to agree with stopping racism in our community everyone has to be ready to be equaled. Racism can be stopped in the Bay Area by many ways and the rite actions by the people of the Bay.
Dr. Dashonne Stokes, a civil rights activist said “What matters most is not 'what ' you are, but 'who ' you are.” Dr. Dashine Stokes is saying that skin color does not matter it’s who you are as a person that matters. In to kill a mockingbird by Harper Lee there are two types of racism: Individual and Institutional, Individual racism is based on personal beliefs of one person. Institutional racism is government or large groups with racist beliefs. Institutional racism is more harmful than Individual racism.
