Aggression has always been an important issue within psychological and behavioral studies. Academic studies have come up with different ways of understanding the triggers for the aggressive behavior. The most well- known outcomes are that frustration gives rise to aggression (Dollard and Miller, 1939) and that the aggression can be caused by punishment or disapproval. However, the scholarship has also introduced the Aggressive Cue Theory, which states that the combination of an aggressive cue and environmental stimuli make people act aggressively. The current research paper aims to investigate the role of environmental stimuli in the aggressive behavior of both football and basketball players and compare the results for further conclusions. …show more content…
The study, which was conducted in 2015, had a purpose to investigate the relationship between game location and the level of aggression in football teams of the Iranian Premier League. The study population consisted of Iranian Premier League Football teams in the 2013- 2014 season, in 60 matches related to four teams in the first half of the season as the selected samples. The findings of the study showed that there is not any significant difference between teams’ aggression in host and guest matches. The results of the survey stated that players of different positions had different violence rate. It was revealed that halfback position players had the most aggressive behavior pattern (Alahvisi, Maleki, Zand Salimi, 2015). A similar study was conducted for examining whether game location influences basketball players’ performance or not. For achieving some results, archival data were obtained from 225 games for the 2004-2005 Euro Leagues. The results of the study led to the modification of Varca's finding, which stated that home teams "play more aggressively on their territory." Home teams outperformed visiting teams in rebounds, blocks, steals, turnovers and field-goal percentages while visiting teams committed more fouls (Sampaio, Jose Ibafiez, Angel Gomez, Lorenzo, Ortega, 2013). As the example of Iranian Premier League showed the halfback position players, in comparison to all other position …show more content…
This research studies this relationship of the sports of football and basketball and suggests that the temperature- aggression and position- aggression relationships are linear. The first study claimed that temperature change affects the aggression rate. In football games, hot temperature influences the number of penalties and in basketball, high heat increase retaliation. The second study showed that game location and player position are closely correlated to aggression. Although the game area had no significant role in increased aggression in football games, the role of player position was important especially in the case of halfback position players. The situation in basketball was right the opposite: set location was important, yet player position had negligible effect. Therefore, we can conclude that environmental stimuli cause aggression, but it differs depending on sport type. Future research should consider other environmental stimuli that may be relevant to see if these results generalize, and also determine how hot temperature and location influence aggressive acts in summer and winter games, group and individual
