The Importance Of Air Pressure In A Soccer Ball

686 Words3 Pages

My project deals with adjusting the air pressure in a soccer ball, and seeing how far it travels when the same force is applied with varying measurements of air. I am testing this topic to show the pros and cons of having a soccer ball correctly and incorrectly pumped while using it to practice and during games. With my project idea there would have been to many variables while testing, I would have to worry about the amount of pressure and how hard I would have to kick the ball. However, I fixed that with adjusting one of the variables... While kicking a soccer ball it is nearly impossible to kick with the same speed, strength, and accuracy, every time; so I will be making a pendulum like contraption to hit the ball with the same amount …show more content…

Air pressure, more commonly known as atmospheric pressure, is an important unit of measurement when dealing with my project. Atmospheric pressure, means the force per area unit pushed against a surface by the weight of the air above that surface. The atmospheric pressure is caused by the weight of the air from a certain measurement point. I will have to use measurements specific to air pressure like bar, psi, and lbs; to measure the amount of air I have pumped into the soccer ball and record it. Atmospheric pressure is a super important part of my project and need the measurements to carry it out. Going by FIFA’s requirements the normal air pressure of a soccer ball should be between 8.5-15.6psi (per square inch) or 0.6-0.8bar . Some soccer balls indicate pressure in bar units, others in psi and lbs. I will be using a size 5 soccer ball to carry out my testing since that is the size I use and the what the professionals use. In this experiment I will be changing the amounts of air, by adding more or less, and see how it affects the distance the ball travels. I will also use the same soccer ball each time so I do not have to many manipulated variables. Which leads me to my next
