Our American society has many written and unwritten rules that people follow. Most of them are necessary for an average American. Some are just made for being nice or to show that you have good manners. These rules could also help a foreigner communicate better with our society. Here are seven commandments, in our society, that most people should follow. You must say “bless you” when someone sneezes around you. Americans have been doing this for years for multiple reasons. Some people believe that when someone sneezes the body opens up to evil spirits. Some also believe a sneeze stops a heart from beating. Saying “bless you” is supposed to be good luck for the sneezer to help keep the heart stable and to keep evil spirits away. You must speak to everyone when you walk into a room. This is mainly part of one’s social skills. This shows the person that you are talking to that you are interested in what they are talking about. For example, say someone is talking to another person and they are playing a game on their phone. That shows the speaker that that person is not really interested in what they are saying. When eating, you should chew with your mouth closed. If you are eating with your mouth open it shows that you have bad manners. It is disgusting to let others see your chewed-up food in your mouth. It is also rude to talk to others while eating. If one is talking to another person while eating there is a slight chance that some of that food may end up on that other person. Men should open the door for women. This is a way for men to show respect for women. It shows that that man was raised right and has great manners.
