“Deciding to Go Pro,” chapter 11 is about how deciding to go a pro and discovering the importance of fundamentals. The authors use the example of Michael Jordan’s accomplishments. Pros like Michael Jordan never settle for staying. They work to become even better and they just focus on accomplishing all of their goals. Also, they pay attention to the basic and manage scheduling to always get accomplished.
Throughout the poem, “Ex-Basketball Player”, John Updike emphasizes the importance of preparing for any possible situations in the future. In the first stanza, the author’s use of enjambment symbolizes the beginning of Flick’s basketball career. The fluidity of the lines contrasts with the choppy basketball related terms such as corner, blocks, and cut-off which are used to support Flick’s one track mind. Even in his life after basketball, Flick sees everything through the eyes of the player he became so familiar with.
In John Updike’s poem, “Ex-Basketball Player”, he uses the narrative poetry genre to effectively demonstrate his purpose: to convince readers that specializing in one specific area may not offer a reliable career, so it is important to consider additional options. Narrative poetry genre is effective because it allows Updike to convey his story through narrative elements such as characterization and setting in an elevated way through poetic elements such as rhyme and figurative language. Two narrative elements that assist in portraying Updike’s purpose are characterization and setting. Characterization of the main character, Flick Webb, effectively displays Updike’s purpose.
The first event I attended was the film on October 14 that was put on by the SDSU men’s basketball team, Hoop Dreams. Before the movie started we got to hear stories from two of the seniors on this year’s SDSU’s men’s basketball team. One of the things I learned while attending the event was how basketball changed the lives of those two seniors. The senior players that spoke where from Flint, MI and Chicago, IL. Both talked about how basketball changed their lives for the better.
I was set on helping my teammates realize that I could be a valuable asset to this team. As the season progressed, my teammates started trusting my decisions on the court and were confident I would try my best to make the right play. I earned their respect as a teammate and made some great news
The poem “Ex-Basketball Player” written by John Updike is about a former high-school basketball star, Flick Webb, who unexpectedly went nowhere in life. Flick’s life could be described as beginning and ending on the basketball court, “he was good: in fact, the best. In ‘46” (14), the speaker of them poem described him. The dilemma with Flick putting all of his time and effort into his high-school basketball career is that he had no effort in continuing his career or to advance onto something new after graduation. Flick ended up working at a local garage where “he just sells gas, checks oil, and changes flats” (19-20).
Fortunately, I have seen a lot of success with two school state championships and competing at the nation’s highest level for the club. But this year, having graduated the majority of our school team, we began the season without much collective experience or talent. As the team captain and only returning starter, I knew that leading the team would be a challenge. Previously, I only had to do my job, but now, my maximum effort and personal commitment to perfection were necessary for our team’s success. My integrity on the court in practice and games had to grow this season, and I am incredibly grateful for this team that is so different from others on which I have played.
The buzzer going off, the crowd cheering, for the first time in school history, Trinty Clinton Township are state chapions. That team made history, acheiving far more than what any spartan was thought possible, but this team accomplished far more than a state championship. There has been Trinity greats that have made a mark in the Trinity basketball program history. I knew, this being my last year at trinity, that I had had mighty big shoes to fill if I also wanted to make a perminet mark at trinity. Realistic Fiction Every day, I would come to the basketball courts on 52nd street. Me and my pals, we would play a pickup with whoever wanted to play, or, at least most people. The ‘Cool Kids’, as we called them, never played with us and we never played with them. They were composed of the football jocks, homecoming kings, and many more. Their ringleader, Roger, was twice my height and he liked to torment me.
Growing up in the southside of queens’ public school is the typical for most African American in the neighborhood. But of course, my mom wanted to make sure I wasn’t just typical so for high school I had attend a private school. I was very eager to join a new school but also nervous but to get rid of nerves I joined various after school activities to meet new people and feel comfortable at school. I joined the girls’ basketball, I quickly noticed that I had been the only African American girl on the team, but I didn’t let that stop me from trying to improve my game and make new friends. As the basketball season went on I had noticed that not much of the girls would talk to me, but I continued to rub it off and made the best out of it.
Shawn walked cautiously down the hall and opened the door after hearing a loud bang, boom, boom, boom! And realized what had made the loud crashing noise. He saw a car speed off as his mom laid on the concrete, covered with blood. Immediately, Shawn bust out in tears and hugs his mom, as she breathes slowly and is close to death. “Son i love you,” all of the sudden she lets go of his hand.
Air ball— again. My form was lost, coordination gone, and so was my patience. I’ve stopped playing basketball for 3 months mainly because of school work and things going on in my life. I was determined to get my skills back no matter how long it’ll take. I started a game of basketball with other people inside the gyms court.
“Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen” famous quote by the best basketball player ever. This is a meaningful quote showing that you get what you work for and earn. If someone works hard and puts in the work needed you will be rewarded but others who just complain and about stuff and say they are getting any progress, they will not be harvesting the full reward. As for myself, I put in the work and tried hard to become a better player and it has paid off. Basketball has yet to fail me.
