Reparations for slavery is the idea that some form of compensatory payment should be made to the descendants of Africans who had been enslaved as part of the Atlantic Slave Trade. With that being said, I don’t believe this essay is a case for reparations. Coates never gives the breakdown of what the United States reparation would look like. He never tells us, his readers, how the system would work, or how anyone would actually make the political case for it. This argument is not about reparations for slavery, either.
The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates is an article issue in June 2014. The article is about discrimination, segregation, and racism toward black Americans. Two and a half centuries ago American success was built on slavery. And in present day African American are being discriminated for the color of their skin that even now the wound that black Americans face in their daily life has never been healed or fully atoned for. African-American historian W.E.B Dubois illustrated how the Civil War brought the problems of African-American experiences into the spotlight. As a socialist, he argued against the traditional Dunning interpretations and voiced opinions about the failures and benefits of the Civil War era, which he branded as a ‘splendid failure’. The impacts of Civil War era enabled African-Americans to “form their own fraternal organizations, worship in their own churches and embrace the notion of an activist government that promoted and safeguarded the welfare of its citizens.”
After Reconstruction, African Americans faced many social, political, and economic issues. The years following the Reconstruction continued to create tension between African Americans and whites. In the south African Americans were still not given the same rights as whites. With this tension, came social, political, and economic issues. During this time, African Americans faced social adversity.
In his article, Coates argues that the idea of reparations needs to have an important place in discussions of race in America. Coates doesn’t argue that a great sum of taxpayer dollars be given to every African American. It is impossible to come up with a lump sum of money that would pay for hundreds of years of enslavement and abuse. Instead, Coates argues that the idea of reparations is what is important. Throughout the period of the Reconstruction, the northerners and southerners viewed and treated blacks differently. For example, the southerners did not have any respect for blacks at this time and treated them terribly. The Southern Black Codes were significant in defining the rights of the freedmen and many of the rights were restricted due to these specific codes. The codes prevented blacks from achieving their own occupation, from voting, and the codes limited any freedom that the individual may have. The blacks had no rights as a citizen due to the southern rules.
The first three chapters of the reading, The Struggle for Black Equality, Harvard Sitkoff runs through the civil rights movement in the 20th century; outlining the adversities facing black people, the resistance to black equality, hindrances to the already progress and the achievements made in the journey for civil rights. John Hope Franklin, in the foreword, dwells on the impact of the time between 1954 and 1992 and the impact it had on American Society, how fight for equality is far from easy and patience is required in the fight to "eliminate the road blocks that prevent the realization of the ideal of equality". In the preface, Sitkoff is clear that that history does not speak for themselves and attempt to detail any particular will be influenced by the author 's personal beliefs. Sitkoff, who associated and identified with the movement, believed "that the struggle was confronting the United States with an issue that had undermined the nation 's democratic institutions". The reparations movement was originally created to primarily help black people gain their own self-sufficiency. The movement began with those like Callie House and Queen Mother Audley, those who wanted African-Americans to heal on their own. They worked for reparations that would help them gain political rights, land, education, their own churches, and healthcare. Most of the movement, the older members especially, believed that the focus should be on helping the members that were unable to help themselves. Over time, as African-Americans started to get educated and started to understand their rights, they began to move towards the political scene and towards more "monetary-based" reparations.
In the 21st century people believe that slavery is a historical relic, but the truth is history always finds a way to repeat itself. Slavery is not something only from the past, across the world its estimated by International Labour Office in 2016 that 40.3 million people are enslaved today. Plus 10 million from that number are children, and 4.1 are being expiate by the government. Consequently, modern slavery is a truly a tormenting phenomena of this period of time and equivalent to slavery, and it is an umbrella term, due to the fact that it isn’t really defined with a term by the law.
