Members of the U.S. Senate serve six-year terms, however, there is no limit to the number of terms an individual may serve. With that being said, many senators serve numerous terms, and it is rather unlikely to see an incumbent senator, a current member of the Senate, lose his/her seat after seeking reelection. This phenomenon is known as the incumbency advantage. As seen in the graph above, incumbent senators up for reelection have had an advantage since at least the mid-twentieth century.
The popularity of the members of Congress and Congress overall has been declining as the years pass and time changes. The dissatisfaction and disapproval of the public is so high because according to David Mayhew who wrote Congress the Electoral Connection members of Congress are single-minded people who are only focused on reelection, involve in “smart” behavior such as position taking, credit-claiming and advertisement. Also, according to Mayhew parties are weak, however, that is all not true people tend to vote more so for their party than the person in general. Arnold the writer of Logic of Congressional Outcome, states that Congress has many things to take into account such as citizen preference, robe-challenger, has to take into account
Are you opposed to the idea of congress members having term limits ? If you are I can understand why but personally I am not. Term limits would be very effective to see change, to give the best-qualified members a chance and restore government accountability. Don’t you think it would be a good idea to have term limits so there would actually be a chance of change ? Of course it would be a good idea !
There are many differing views on the powers congress holds, and congress itself, one such point of view is on whether or not congressmen should have a limited number of terms they are capable of serving, similar to how the president is only capable of serving two terms, and whether or not it would benefit both the people and the government. Congress itself is the legislative branch of the federal government, and as such holds a large amount of authority and power, including putting laws into effect, declaring war, taxing, impeachment, and many other important duties that can be carries out only by congress. Furthermore, members of congress do not have limits on the amount of terms they are allowed to serve, only limits on the length of each term, for those in the house of representatives each term is two years, while in the senate, each term is six years long. I find this to be a matter of public concern because many
Former President James Madison talked about a rotation of offices, a coolness within the senate, and how the lack of limitations would lead to the rise in career politicians while making legislators live as citizens under their own laws. Madison wanted to keep “Career Politicians” from holding a seat of power and becoming corrupt and wrote many speeches and papers regarding the subject. As one of the most powerful appointed titles in the world, term limits will always be
Throughout history, countries are inevitably pulled into conflicts that result in war. These conflicts usually occur because of interests in: economic gain, territorial gain, religion, and nationalism. America, like every country, needs a military to defend itself, especially when tensions arise in other parts of the world and when militia numbers start to decrease. This then allows the government to draft its population to serve in the military. People argue that young men and women’s bright lives are often cut short, and not allowed their Constitutional right to “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness”, but there are many benefits for the nation and the individual by serving one’s country.
The Supreme Court is an extremely important part of government. As such, we need healthy judges that are on top of their mental game. Therefore, term limits are necessary because newer judges can have a different point of view, mental health will be reduced, and the majority of Americans support term limits. If we have newer judges they will have a different point of view. In the article, Christopher stated that “It would mean a court that more accurately refers the changes and judgements of the society.”
When the three branches of government were created a system of “check and balances” was built into the Constitution in order to keep one branch of government from becoming too large and too powerful. Actions that are taken by one branch of government affect the other branches, thereby introducing “oversight”. The intelligence community has both internal and external oversight. The internal oversight comes from the CIA Inspector General that is embedded within the intelligence community. The external oversight comes from both the executive and legislative branches of the government.
Slaughterhouse Five The best known work by Kurt Vonnegut is a part dark comedy, part war memoir and part science fiction. Satire, stellar writing, and a voice like no other are what make Slaughterhouse Five one of the finest pieces of literature ever to be penned, and it’s author one of the finest novelists to put pen to paper. The main character of the book, Billy Pilgrim jumps between points in his life, without much patter or reason. We follow him between life of the the planet Tralfamadore, (where he was kidnapped by aliens, “unsticking” him in time), to Dresden, Germany during the Second World War, and from his life before the war till his life after with his family.
Overall, as the Majority Leader of Arkansas State, I believe that Congress members should have a set term limit. I fully believe what the twenty-second Amendment says and that we should follow it up adding Congress members
The Senate and House of Representatives comprise the two chambers of the United States Congress. While both houses are representative bodies and jointly oversee the executive branch, both must approve all bills before the president, but both chambers have different roles according to the Constitution. The House of Representatives has 435 members apportioned to the house from across the United States. States with larger populations receive more seats within the house.
One of the first things that can be done to lower incumbency rates is to better inform the voter population about the congressmen running. Many do not know the people who are running or the values they stand for. So by being not being informed, people just end up voting for
It makes complete sense for people to be able to vote if they are old enough to be sent to war. The change in voting age is a very important event that happened because of the Vietnam
The committee system are the people who assist in arranging the essential work of Congress, which includes: understanding, forming, and pass on laws to dictate the country. 8,000 or more can be seen by the committee each year, but only 10% or less are actually sent out for debate and a vote. I believe this is beneficial to the law-making process because it means that the laws being passed and set in stone have gone through careful consideration and have been through multiple people to figure out if this law is necessary to be put into effect and not cause mayhem in the country. This also helps congress not have to do a load of work and get nothing done because they are fighting and killing a bill without knowing anything about it. Only
Limited Government is important because it keeps the Government in check. Without Limited Government the politicians will walk all over us. There is a reason why checks and balanced. The three separate branches of government are there to keep politicians from abusing their power.
