Abortion is a highly sensitive subject across the world, every culture has a different view on what is right and what is wrong. India has a concerning girl to boy ratio (927 girls per 1000 boys) compared to the world wide ratio which is 1000 girls for every 1005 boys. India has seen a significant decrease in girls born in the last 20 years, a factor to this is the introduction to medical equipment that enables sex selection. GE Healthcare is a company which deliver medical imaging equipment internationally, including India. It can be discussed to which extent GE Healthcare has an ethical responsibility in the way their equipment is used.

Utilitarianism is an ethical theory can be briefly explained as the outcome of an action that brings the most benefit is the right action. In other words it is an ethical theory which puts high emphasis on the consequence of an action, to judge whether something is ethically right or wrong. Ethics is a subjective matter, and the opinions of it will be different across the globe, therefor the ethical opinions of GE Healthcare will differ from the ethical standpoints of the Indian people. It is therefor important to underline the morality behind an action or the consequence of an action. Morality is often subject to different cultures, but there’s a basic moral that is quite common throughout the world, equality. GE Healthcare are not directly responsible for the misuse of their equipment and how it leads to sex selection in India. On the one hand they are making sex selection more accessible for the population of India, by offering their products to the market.
