The desirable traits were seen to be prominent in the superior classes thus, sterilizing those with inferior traits to prevent them from spoiling the chances of the master race. This master race consisted of those with high intelligence, fair skin tones, desirable physical characteristics, and not a descendent of a minority race. This form of segregation divided people with race, intelligence, physical characteristics, and class. People of with disabilities, lower financial classes, and immigrants to the United States were sterilized for permanent birth control, and sometimes without their consent or knowledge.
I am currently taking Genetics at ASU and I found the topic of human genetic engineering to be extremely fascinating. However, I did not have any understandings of the ethical issues surrounding the topic of genetically modified humans. This particular topic is very controversial because many individuals believe that the technical advances to genetically engineering humans will interfere the nature, cause substantial environmental damage, and modifying the genome is another way of playing God. Matter of a fact, a tremendous amount of countries either discourage or outright ban the practice. On the other hand, others believe that genetic engineering is one of the most moral things we can do for humans.
Imagine a baby just born, screaming, kicking, and gasping for air. The doctors save the baby, but they discover the new born has cystic fibrosis. Changing the DNA in the embryo can result in a longer period of life and the destruction of the disease(s) all together While the experimentation of DNA change could result in many problems, Genetic engineering should be allowed to alter the DNA in embryo because genetically passed down diseases can be eradicated from the human genome, cancer such as breast cancer can be prevented, and people could be saved in the early and latter half of their lives. Genetically transferred diseases or disorders such as cystic fibrosis can be devastating. This disease causes a higher vulnerability to contracting colds and causes breathing difficulties.
As technology advances, more things become possible. One of these things is genetically modifying a baby, this is very wrong. Genetic modifying or genetic engineering is altering someone or something’s DNA. Scientists hope to cure diseases with this method but doing this can lead to some harmful effects. This process is very unethical.
Some of the endless amounts of possible benefits to Genetic Engineering such as genetically altering the traits of Humans and or Animals, another benefit is being able to produce resilient crops and heighten the crops yield, and also eliminating cancers/diseases or hereditary disorders; But on the other hand, Genetic Engineering can possibly lead “Playing God” to being able to create Humans ‘designer babies’ inevitably going against the morals
