Geology is the science of the Earth. The fascination of this subject is so great that a considerable amount of geologists spend months at sea drilling holes in the ocean floor, scaling mountains, camping in rain-drenched jungles and trudging through scorching deserts regardless of how hard the environment. Why it is so fascinated and why should students study geology, particularly those major in Civil Engineering. Basically, geology not only reveals how the world was made, how it continues to evolve, the formation of numeral resources but also indicates how to prevent contamination of water and how to predict the dangerous movement of the Earth (Marshak, 2013). Generally, there are quite lots of different check dams that are available for construction. Through visual observation, we can conclude it is the first kind of the second row that is being constructed in Sham Tseng Check Dam. Having three layers from the hill, the debris-resisting barrier at Sham Tseng consists of fair face concrete blocks and barrier walls ( AECOM Asia Company Limited, 2010 ). Thus, the energy and impulse of the detrimental debris flows will be reduced layer by layer so that when they reach the village, they will not produce deadly result. In addition, reinforced concrete barriers generally designed to resist large-scale debris flow events of up to1400 m3 which means they have sufficient abilities to resist a considerable volume of debris flows (Wong, Ko & Hui, 2006). The check dam is located on the hill foot. Such location reduce the impulse and impact of the debris to the check dam since a proportion of them are ellivated going through the natural slope. Besides, located just above the village, the check dam ensure the safety of the village when debris flow happen. In addition to the three-layer check dam, boulder fences are also established up on the hillside to catch falling
