Between 1800 and 1900, the United States experienced great economic growth. Two factors that contributed to this growth were government policies and technological developments. America at the time was experiencing cultural and industrial revolutions at a rate that most other new nations, even today, could ever dream of. Government policies and technological developments had a huge influence on the American economy and shaped its character to an extent that defined for the future magnitude of success that it would see throughout the century. Policies such as the National Road and the tariff tax, and technological developments such as the cotton gin and the production of railroads, all contributed to the economic growth of the United States.
No one today, can go a day without being affected by technology let alone go without it. People depend on it to make everyday tasks like transportation, education, and leisure feasible. Technology is praised for doing many magnificent things, for example, helps cure lethal diseases, solve crimes, and keeps communication in tact around the world in an instant.
Technology and American Economic Growth Economic growth in the United States of America between 1840 and 1860 was mainly due to advancements in technology that allowed many things to be done better, faster, and cheaper. These advancements helped push the economy to its potential by introducing new methods of agriculture, manufacturing, and transportation. These new methods brought about an economic uprising across the country. During this time, American settlers were moving west looking for fertile land for planting.
Over the period, Internet usage has seen tremendous growth. The number of Internet users across the world increased from 394 million to 1.858 billion. By 2010, 22 percent of the world's population had access to computers with 1 billion Google searches every day, 300 million Internet users reading blogs, and 2 billion videos viewed daily on YouTube – Refer Fig 1.1 source International telecommunication union. India stands third biggest nation in internet usage, with high social & mobile audience.
Many things contribute for the possibility of technology to advance the economics in a period, especially since every area has different needs. A few contributing factors were slavery, population growth and risk and benefits. Mokyr even thinks that every invention raises the amount of technological need; once something is created people scramble to create something better, something to advance it even farther. During the early period technological advance was rare possibly due to slave labor, the labor was basically free and the rich owners made a lot of money off them, and they did not care to help make the process easier or faster for them. The educated inventors had to learn to communicate with the labor field to find where advances could be made.
From state monopoly state with very limited growth, it has increased at the level of an industry. Telephone, fixed or mobile, is an essential necessity for the people of India. This changing phase was possible with the economic development that followed the process of structuring the economy in the capitalist model. The elimination of restrictions on foreign capital investment and the granting of industrial licenses has led to a rapid growth of this sector. At present, the country's telecommunications industry has achieved a growth rate of 14 per cent.
Here technology comes handy. It not only makes information more accessible but also eases the knowledge sharing and generation without regard to time and geographical boundaries Technology is not only transforming the way we live but also the way we behave, how we interpret ourselves as a person, friend, group member, employee and citizen. For example, people today are trying to find solutions to difficult questions in life through websites like qoura by answers from other people who come form variety of backgrounds from all over the world.
Multiple countries throughout the world have internet access at their fingertips and are able to find the answer to their questions instantly. “As of June 2017, 51% of the world’s population has internet access. In 2015, the International Telecommunication Union estimated about 3.2 billion people, or almost half of the world’s population, would be online by the end of the year” (Gordon). Billions of people use the Internet each and every day to research topics, check their social media, and communicate. The nation as a whole has become extremely dependent on technology to do their work and survive through the day.
Connectivity in developing countries enables people to participate in the digital economy thus stimulate the ecnomic impact and also enabling the transition to knowledge-based economies. This is figured by the genuine Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and development, and is measured by utilizing genuine terms such as “Balanced Inflation”. These terms help to remove any distorted views on the perceived outcome of inflation on the cost of merchandises produced. Likewise, Economic growth is related to the high expectations in a person’s standard of living. If the standards are high, it wouldn’t be beneficial for the economy as the working class individuals will face a lot of trouble.
Economic growth and economic development In measuring and identifying the factors that stimulate the growth of the economy of a nation such as the Republic of India, a distinction needs to be made between economic growth and economic development. For a nation to experience economic growth, there must be an increase in the gross domestic product (GDP), which is a qualitative measure of the value of all finished goods and services produced in that country within a period of time. However, economic development which is usually measured through the human development index (HDI), includes not only an increase in the output of goods and services, but an improvement in the welfare of individuals within a country.
