Everyone matures in their lifetime because of one occurrence or event. A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is a novel about the protagonist learning a life lesson or maturing in some aspect. Throughout the story, growth and maturity plays the biggest roll on Finny, Gene, and Leper. Finny matures into reality of the war throughout A Separate Peace.
During the late 1930’s and early to mid1940’s, Allies were fighting the axis powers in WW2. Along with the high tensions amongst countries, there was also high tension amongst civilian lives. John Knowles’ A Separate Peace clearly shows the tension within a friendship similar to that of Britain’s and Germany’s relationship. Through Allegory, John Knowles shows the tension within two friends that eventually leads to their inevitable demise. The symbolic items in the book are: Gene, the main character, Finny, the deuteragonist, and Finny’s pink shirt.
A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a fictional book about Gene Forrester, a student at Devon Private Boarding School. This story takes place during the 1940s when World War II was becoming more and more a part of daily life at Devon. The war encroaches and finally dominates the lives of the boys at Devon. Starting with the boys shoveling snow off of the train tracks, then their friend, Leper, enlists, and finally troops get permanently stationed at Devon.
In A Separate Peace, John Knowles uses the universality of jealousy and envy to develop a theme based upon man’s inhumanity to man. Fifteen years after attending Devon, an elite military preparatory school located in New Hampshire, the narrator, Gene Forrester, returned to reflect upon how fearful he was during the time he spent training and studying for World War II. He then decides to visit the places or symbols on the campus that were closely associated with his fear; a marble staircase and a tree placed near the bank of the river. As Gene visits these key symbols of fear, he flashes back upon his time at Devon. He remembers his best friend, Phineas or Finny, as a very superior athlete and charming young man.

In the novel, both boys try to stay true to who they are as people. But only one of those boys stays true to who they are. He faces problems with friends and school life during the time of World War two and the draft being in full swing.

Gene, the protagonist, has to fight an unending emotional battle against his desire to be better than his naive and trusting friend, Phineas. Jealousy completely consumes Gene’s emotional life, it causes everyone to lose trust and respect for him, and forces him to watch his best friend suffer because of his own treacherous actions. Once the novel begins, we see Gene becoming close friends with Phineas, or Finny for short, and Gene starts by describing a time when his pride first controls him.
A Separate Peace displays how fear and greed challenge, and ultimately destroy, the trust in the friendship between the ever-obedient Gene, and the resistant and curious Finny. “For all the camaraderie between them, these boys are still driven by pious old healthy competition, which at times can end up being, well, less than healthy” (Shmoop.com). This quote demonstrates how friendship is a confederacy of admiration, respect, jealousy and displeasure. It also shows how a friendship will always lead to some deliberation on subjects, potentially altering the very basis of a person’s mental model toward a shared goal. This shared goal, determined by divergent conclusions, will bring conflict, and ultimately, a mutual understanding.
