Journeys all have the capability of metamorphosing the journeyer through a series of thought provoking experiences and physical affliction. These concepts are explored in the memoir My Place (1987), written by Sally Morgan, who writes about the journeys of self acceptance of her mother Gladys and grandmother Daisy Coruuna; Chocolat (2000), directed by Lasse Hallstrom, where the change in personalities are noticed in Josephine Muscat and Le Comte de Reynaud and in Hansel and Gretel, written by The Brothers Grimm.

This idea is explored in Hansel and Gretel, when the witch befriends Hansel and Gretel and invites them into her home, where she offers them more lollies. “She was in reality a wicked witch”. The alliteration of ‘wicked witch’ highlights the fact that this woman they’ve come across is extremely dangerous, and therefore poses as another obstacle in their journey back home. It is now expected that Hansel finds a way to get them out of this predicament, hence saving himself and his sister as he usually does. Although, when Hansel is immobile due to the over consumption of sweets, It seems that this time the children won’t be lucky enough to escape. However, after the witch demands Gretel to open the oven, Gretel tricks her, pushes her in and runs to save Hansel, “Gretel however, ran like lightning to Hansel….” The simile shows Gretel’s anxiety as she frantically rushes to her brothers aid. Also, contrast in her behaviour is evident as, instead of crying like she used to, she is now becoming brave and taking charge to save her brother.
