The Importance Of Life Orientation

Life Orientation, as a subject, provides a framework for teachers to address the aims, as set out in the constitution of the republic of South Africa, to work towards the transformation and development of society, through education. In this report, I will highlight and discuss the importance of Life Orientation in order to improve the status of the subject Life Orientation. Further on, I will briefly discuss the need for Life Orientation, with particular reference to adolescent risk behavior/s.
I understand, for many people Life Orientation is ‘just’ a subject, which one MUST have on school. However, Life Orientation is anything but ‘just’ a subject. According to the Department of Education, Life Orientation is important, because it is aimed at engaging learners in personal, psychological, neuro-cognitive, motor, physical, moral, spiritual, cultural, and socio-economic areas. This is, to ensure that learners achieve their full potential in the new democracy of South Africa (2003). With this said, Life Orientation is an important subject, because it entails important focus areas, such as: health, social development, personal development, physical development, and the world of work. By studying these focus areas, learners learn how to live a balanced, healthy and independent life. Moreover, it makes learners aware of their personal strengths, and teaches them to work on their weaknesses.
If one do not have Life Orientation, then everything else will ‘go down the drain’. This
