For most of human history, language has seemed to be an impediment stopping the world from becoming one undivided whole. A lot of people are somewhat scared to admit to their fear of working in a cosmopolitan company, traveling abroad and even of stumbling upon a foreigner. However, many people believe that the trend is shifting. According to a survey of European Commission (2006), fifty-six percent of respondents reported being able to communicate in a language other than their mother tongue. Whilst it views that people who only speak one language are more likely to struggle in life and wonder why they are left behind, multilingual people often show their confidence in several fields. Nowadays, language skills, once considered plus points on a resume, are now more or less requirements. Speaking more than one language goes a long way in helping to find a good position in a big company where dealing with international clients is the norm. Certain jobs that require multilingualism such as interpreters, language instructors, or tour guides, are generally increasing. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2016-17) observed that “employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 29 percent from 2014 to 2024”. Not only does being multilingual help us get a job but it also raises your salary, relatively speaking. Take English-speaking people as an example. Chiswick and Miller (1997) found that immigrants with a first language other than English who became fluent in English over time made about 15 to 19 percent higher than their English-born co-workers. Moreover, knowing more than one language can widen our educational prospects. If we want to attain higher education or study abroad, being multilingual will be beneficial. It may help us to stand out in comparison to our peers when we compete to win a scholarship. People may doubt the benefits multilingualism can bring but nowadays the advantages it offers over monolingual speakers is gradually becoming more and more obvious. Whether opening up doors, making influences on personality or arousing the brain 's deeper functions, multi-language speaking continues to prove its strength to the world in one way or another.
