The destruction of racial equality is an impossible target with the oblivious society, laced with racial injustice and discrimination, that exists in this day and age. Gender equality between Blacks and Whites (America’s two largest racial groups) is declining. This is in response to economic, political, and social reasons, but it can all be dwindled down to two main points. A major point, that might seem miniscule compared to others, is the lack of a word in our society’s terminology “for systematic racialization, beyond the level of individual prejudice or personal bias,” (Coleman, 178). Past President Barack Obama once said that issues with race has been a conflict for too long to be where it is today; more actions need to be taken to end it once and for all. One way people are voicing their opinions is through protesting. Protesting allows individuals of all ages to enlighten others on problems that impact the world. The news has recently been plastered with a movement called Black Lives Matter (BLM). The dictionary definition of BLM is, “a political and social movement originating among African Americans, emphasizing basic human rights and racial equality for black people and campaigning against various forms of racism.” This started in 2013 when a women named Alicia Garza responded to the facebook post of George Zimmerman, the man who gunned down Trayvon Martin. This movement has been fueled and shaped by the popularity and availability of social media. The true nature of what some black people face in their everyday lives can all be seen on social media. When I looked up #BlackLivesMatter on twitter I immediately saw videos of caucasians using racial slurs to describe black people. That hashtag was also flooded an obscene amount of posts, pictures and videos of black people being mistreated and even gunned down and killed by cops. Although people can not, nor should, link all white people or cops together; we do need to bring to light that some are.
