Importance of Respect “Unlike food, respect costs nothing. Why then should it be in short supply?” wrote Richard Sennett in his book Respect: The Formation of Character in an Age of Equality (??????). The concept of respect is philosophically challenging, but socially and morally important, as it reveals our attitudes and influences to the world around us. Respect is seen by many as the way of showing someone that you think highly of them, namely, respect them! There are many synonyms underlining numerous aspects of respect, including ‘status’, ‘admiration’, ‘appreciation’, ‘recognition’, ‘honor’, and ‘dignity’. The basic social guidelines for respect are taught by our parents and school teachers. The parental directives to be nice, generous, thankful are the cornerstone for respectful interactions within the society. These principles are combined with community consensus about respectful behavior and define standards to maintain our interactions with others (Wilson, 2015). If a person is not respected by his/her parents during his/her childhood and adolescence years, he/she has a higher need to feel respected when he/she becomes adults. Later in life, such people take things personally tending to make a big ‘scene’ over small issues. This can be achieved by fulfilling the child 's natural needs. As the child grows older, the methods need to be changed, as he/she begins to develop his/her own views and preferences, and his/her needs become more complex due to crucial psychological and physical changes (Fromm). There is a popular opinion that showing respect to someone means that a person is weak and degrading (??????). This misleading concept is often supported by younger generation that associates respect with a sign of inferiority that can possibly harm one’s self-respect. In fact, this has nothing to do with personal weakness, but the ability to admire and appreciate that makes us real human
