People of Mexican ancestry have a long and well-known career in United States military history, serving in the American Revolution and in every military task since then. Their bravery and heroism was especially noticeable during World War II when the United States joined the Allies against the Axis Powers in 1941. Considering Mexican American youth during World War II, musical genres were developed as a response to the pachuco and Mexican American youth culture. In 1942, a young Latino man was murdered after spending the evening out with friends in a barrio near Los Angeles.
Civil Rights Through Civil Disobedience "Under a government which imprisons any unjustly, the true place for a just man is also a prison" (Thoreau). This is a quote from Civil Disobedience, an essay written by Henry David Thoreau in 1849. Within this essay, Thoreau emphasizes the importance of taking action to combat injustice instead of doing nothing beyond pointing it out and calling it wrong. Civil Disobedience eventually became a strong influence for the civil rights movement, as illustrated in the graphic novel March by John Lewis. Martin Luther King Jr once stated, “One has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” in his Letter from Birmingham Jail in 1963. He was invoking the principle of civil disobedience. He wasn't justifying breaking laws just because, but instead, meant that you break the law and accept your punishment, in hopes that people will come to see that the law is unethical. Civil disobedience plays an important role in how our society has been shaped up until this point.
America has a long history with riots, both in urban and rural settings. However, urban riots, and especially urban riots in Cincinnati, have covered the same subject matter for the past 200 years: race. As such, Cincinnati acts as a great representative of the average American city, Los Angeles and New York being the exceptions. Cincinnati’s racially charged past largely lies in place because of its location. Cincinnati’s placement on the border between the north and south means an influx of escaped slaves and later emancipated into a city that once contained and white majority.
After doing peaceful demonstration, King was arrested. While Martin Luther king Jr was in Birmingham jail, he came across the clergymen statement calling his peaceful demonstration “unwise and untimely”. So he wrote the letter to the Clergymen explaining the reason why he was in Birmingham. He states that the reason he was in Birmingham because the injustice was here. Like Apostle Paul left his village in spread of gospel in the far corner of Rome, he also will do the same thing to spread the gospel of freedom beyond his own town and that’s the reason he was in Birmingham.
The Rodney King Riot happened in Los Angeles in the year of 1992. Rodney King was an African American male who was arrested on charges because of speeding, drunk driving, and refusing to stop his vehicle. Four police officers who have claimed to have witnessed King’s actions such as being high on drugs and was trying to attack them explains why they did what they did. A resident nearby by the name of George Holliday captured about 12 minutes of the attack on film. King was tasered, brutally beaten with side-handled batons, then forced to the ground to lie still which was where he was handcuffed.
Racism and segregation has a mass history in the United States which impacted our society greatly. There were many riots, boycotts, and strikes which occurred throughout the 1900’s. Many people simply wanted peace and to bring everyone together no matter what race or color and others wanted to be separated from people with a different skin color and race. Whites and blacks were being separated from bathrooms and even restaurants. This resulted in conflict between our society which left many killed and injured.
In Birmingham, Alabama on April 3, 1963, a civil rights campaign began. With coordinated marches and sit-ins against racism and racial segregation, the nonviolent operation was organized by the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and Martin Luther King 's Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). After several days of protesting, a ban on parading, demonstrating, boycotting, trespassing and picketing was sanctioned. Leaders of the campaign declared they would defy the ruling. On April 12, King was arrested along with activist Ralph Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth and other protestors in front of thousands of African Americans dressed for Good Friday looked on.

THE STONEWALL RIOTS The Stonewall riots are widely believed to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Considered by some to be the "Rosa Parks" moment of the gay rights movement in America, the riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations against a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York, in the early hours of June 28th, 1969. This single event has left a resounding impact on the fight for LGBT rights that can still be seen today. Throughout the 50s and 60s in the United States, the FBI along with local police departments kept close watch on what they believed to be "homosexual activity".
Civil disobedience has been discerned in numerous time periods of American history. The definition of disobedience can be interpreted when one or a group prioritizes their conscience of their beliefs over the dictation of laws through rebellion. Notable historical events of slavery and independence has been marked with the disobedience of government laws. Even though the disobedience of societal laws can undermine the corruption of the government, disobedience has undeniably steer societal progress. A form of civil disobedience was the fight for independence of the colonies in the American Revolution.
Because, after all, it's our beloved city, too. Boston may be your hometown but we claim it, too. It's one of America's iconic cities. It's one of the world's great cities.
It is exactly this compact city that allowed me to know a lot about city life. I have also since discovered that city folk know very little about the world outside of their community, the greater city and the outside world. What I appreciate about growing up in a small town is that we were not cut off from the rest of the world. On the contrary, our little town gave us access to the world.
I was visiting a friend there last year and I could not believe that place was part of America. Abandoned buildings everywhere, houses that were set on fire, you could feel the loneliness of that place. It was devastating to see how the country forget these people that live in Detroit and leave them in their misery. Crime is the main problem. People live with fear, gangs burn abandoned houses when they want to, even when people are living next to those houses.
