In the Suzanne Collins novel ‘The Hunger Games’, a transitioning incident for katniss that occurs in this novel is Rue’s death. It is of vital importance in understanding what Katniss is to do next in the novel and the changes that occur mentally, physically and spiritually within her for the duration of her time in the arena.

When Katniss first comes across Rue, the readers are given a huge indicator that Rue is going to be somewhat important, as she is almost immediately compared to Prim, the most important character in Katniss’s life. She is small, young and sweet, similar to Prim, and as a result of this Katniss instantly feels a subconscious pull towards her.
