Starting the 1700s , self-government in colonial America prior to 1776 was affected by both democracy and freedom of the press. To have self government means to have the government of a country be runned by it ’s people. The idea of self government has revolutionized since 1776 into what it has become today. The Mayflower Compact in Plymouth and The Trial of John Peter Zenger in New York are both major events that have sparked the beginning of self government in the colonies.
Living in a country where everyone is different how would one describe what it means to be American? We pride ourselves with being a big melting pot. With different traditions, cultures, and races, but what exactly does being American mean? Is it patriotism in our country, freedom, and having a democratic government? These things are what being American means to me.
Impacts of Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece on America Most of America considers itself a “Great” nation. Whether this means powerful, intelligent, flourishing, thriving, et cetera, is unclear. In order to explore where America obtained the inspiration for its greatness, I am going to walk through the influence of the great Greek and Roman cultures and Empires (so to speak). These ancient civilizations were among the first that had governments of democracy and sophistication, of elections and thriving economies on a mass scale.
Emiliano Segura America has not always been the intrusive neighbor whose only goal is to spread the message of democracy and capitalism. In fact, America—for most of its early lifetime—played their role in the world as an isolated island far away from Europe’s reach: avoiding conflict at all costs. It was mostly a country of production, gaining most of their wealth from manufacturing and trading goods. Much like China, Americans were the producers of the 19th century. Moreover, America practiced what is known as isolationism—especially during the time of war; but as the U.S. grew in the 20th century, so did there want to expand their messages of liberty, economy, and government; which it did effectively through the means of war.
The nineteenth century isolationism was a movement of the United States to become an independent nation. They did not want allies and they wanted to be their own country. Meaning they did not want to be part of the UN. A lot of countries at the tim were becoming independent at the time because they felt compelled as a nation to come together in union. A lot of countries did not realize at the time that because their was a strong sense of nationalism.
The United States was built among some of the greatest minds the world had ever seen, and to present times there have been comparably few to ever duplicate their genius. While history likes classifying these men into one unified chunk of American History, the Founding Fathers were actually a conglomerate of diverse thinkers. Some of the men believed in the philosophies of John Locke, who stated that humans were born neither good or bad, but with a blank slate. Many other men followed the human theories of Thomas Hobbes and the religion of Calvin, which viewed mankind a naturally flawed and more susceptible to a state of war. (Gavai 2009, 14) From my understanding economics is a foe of ethics mainly because everyone is a psychological egoist, this is where individuals act in manner that is only in their best perceived material self-interest. As a result, it seems that it would be very difficult to have any ethical standards in place, mainly due to the fact that ethics requires individuals to act against our own material self-interest. In Norman Bowie's book Economics, Friend or Foe of Ethics, he mentions that ethics would be pointless if psychological egoism is true.
It is easy for myself and everyone else to take for granted the fact that America is a free country, but as best as I possibly can, I will uphold the culpability given to me, to help the country in any way possible. Imagine a country where everyone used their freedoms and abilities to better our country and mankind in general. It is amazing to think what the outcome would be with the participation of all Americans using their freedoms and rights to help others, our government, and our country. When I examine our
Being an American can mean many different things all depending on the different perspectives of different ethnic or religious groups. So what does being an American mean to me? Being an American to means that everyone can live a happy stress free life where they don’t have to worry about being discriminated against or feeling like they don’t have equal rights. To start with, being an American can range in definition depending on a person 's perspective of America. Personally, I would say being an American is when you can live a happy life where you don 't have to worry about being treated differently because of the color of your skin.
America is a big superpower, a force to be reckoned with, and a corporate country. America is built upon freedom and money just like anywhere else. But with the way I think that were going, that’s the only thing America will be in the future. And the American dollar will be worth less and less, and the economy will crash more and more. Like I said earlier America is a corporate country based upon cash.
I envision the future America as a sanctuary that will protect and love the citizens of this country more than it is shown in the society of today. I imagine that the violence and chaos that is present today will eventually be defeated if we can conquer it with compassion and understanding. When we provide good work ethics along with focus, America will be built up the way it was intended to be. The thirty-third president of the United States, Harry S. Truman, stated, “America was not built on fear. America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand.”
