It is just a matter of time before something happens to our planet that is devastating to the point that it changes the course of life, as we know it. Whether is a natural catastrophe, as of a comet, or self-dispensed, as atomic war, it is conceivable that our home will never again be habitable. What happens, then, to the greater part of the achievements of the last thousand eras? The greater part of every invention, achievement, and most importantly people could be erased forever. Unless, obviously, there are a couple of people living somewhere else in the close planetary system.
