The way things are, the greater part of mankind is in one little container called "Earth". It is just a matter of time before something happens to our planet that is devastating to the point that it changes the course of life, as we know it. Whether is a natural catastrophe, as of a comet, or self-dispensed, as atomic war, it is conceivable that our home will never again be habitable. What happens, then, to the greater part of the achievements of the last thousand eras? The greater part of every invention, achievement, and most importantly people could be erased forever. Unless, obviously, there are a couple of people living somewhere else in the close planetary system. Space investigation and colonization of the Moon and Mars are a protection arrangement for humankind and the greater part of our accomplishments.

Space exploration brings together a lot of smart people from many different fields and arranges them to work on some very diverse issues. The result is not only extraordinary scientific discoveries, but also many useful inventions.
