In Suzanne Collins’ novel, The Hunger Games Katniss’ relationship with Peeta, Rue, and Thresh is important to her story of survival. Firstly, Peeta is crucial to Katniss’ survival in The Hunger Games because he sets up intertwined lovers. This is important to their survival because the rules changed in the middle of the game, but then switched to get a bigger audience. Nonetheless, this helped them win as without a victor it would not be the Hunger Games. So it was decided that they both win with the 2 victors from District 12. Earlier, before the games and when Katniss could sign up for the tesserae. She was on the streets and starving as her mother was still shocked by the death of her husband. She saves Katniss but Katniss got stung a few times by the tracker jackers. Rue then helps her again, by using a specific plant to help with the stung area to reduce the pain. Rue helping Katniss is a big deal because, without Rue’s help, Katniss would probably have been found by the Careers and killed. Rue also helps Katniss by warning her about the camp or pile of loot by the lake. This gives awareness to Katniss to know what could be protecting the camp from other Tributes. Where she waits for someone to come, is where she sees Foxface get around the landmines without activating them. Which then proves her suspicion so she shoots at the bag of apples. Which then explodes once the apples fall on the ground activating all the landmines and destroying all the loot and leaving Katniss deaf in one ear. Another reason why Rue is important is the fact that she reminds her of her own sister. As Rue dies her wish was for Katniss to win the games for her which motivates Katniss to win for her.
