Many times in history, humans have come into conflict with each other trying to satisfy their needs. In Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury argues that conflict is not the best way to resolve competition. Bradbury demonstrates how friendship through teamwork are important by depicting how Jim, Will, and Charles cooperate with each other in perilous situations, stay loyal to each other against their own better judgement, and work together against greater evil. One of the friends tries to help the other by preventing him from making a dangerous choice that can endanger Jim and Will. In Chapter 18, Will feels wary about the carnival and tries to convince Jim not to go on the carnival. However, Jim ignore Will and continues on to the carnival. Although Will is ultimately unsuccessful it shows how when one friend tries to help the other from doing something wrong. Later in the book when Jim tries to ride the carousel, Will successfully stops him from aging on it. One of the most important events was the defeat of Mr. Dark using tricks and knowledge to outsmart him. In the scene, Charles Halloway creates against the Witch and Mr. Dark to help the boys escape. This improvisation shows how Mr. Halloway used his mind to be able to help the two boys. Another example occurs earlier on in the book, when Jim and Will realize that Ms. Foley’s “nephew” was actually Mr. Cooger based on his looks and actions. This is an example of the friends using context clues to find hidden details within someone and ultimately lead to them trying to stop him. The intelligence of the protagonists and their ability to work together were one of the main reasons they were able to come out of so many different difficult
