A reason the dress code needs some adjusting is how female clothes are made. Typically female clothes are made by males like Christian Dior, Guccio Gucci, and Michael Kors; just to name a few well known designers. The more fashion icons and role models wear shorter shorts the more the fashion scene appeals and creates clothes like the ones being displayed. The AP English class conducted an experiment out of curiosity, in which they measured the length of their shorts from the top of the knee to the end of the pair of shorts. The measurements were then compared to the stated length in the dress code, which is 4” above the knee. On average the length was 8.6”, about double the stated length. The dress code should not be something that causes trouble or debate. As stated before, it should also be a community decision, let those who live in the area and attend the school have a say instead of a few officials in a boardroom. With that being said, a rule that has room for improvement is the short lengths. As mentioned, short lengths are extremely diverse and vary upon the body type of the individual. The rule set in place now is “[shorts] should be no higher than 4 inches above the knee cap…” This is a rule that is absurd in the twenty-first century, most shorts are, on average, 8 inches above the knee. We have looked through many other high school dress codes and found one that fits more broadly and can pander to any one no matter the height. Columbus City Schools have stated in their dress code that, “Shorts and skirts may not be shorter than mid-thigh.” The thigh on a human being is measured from the kneecap to the hip bone.
