The planet Earth is called the blue planet in our solar system. About 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. The ocean provides the Earth with important ecological and economic services. Water is crucial to all living life, it makes life on Earth possible. It also provides all organisms the ideal conditions to thrive. Not only does it support life, it is also a beautiful element on this planet. People enjoy the beaches for its beauty and relaxation it provides. But this beauty is constantly being threatened by human activity. The amount of physical and chemical waste, the human race has put into it has greatly decreased the effectiveness of the ocean at maintaining life. Some people don’t think twice when taking out their trash on a weekly basis. But the trash are physical objects with mass, and mass does not just disappear. Some trash are piled on to each other forming into “trash island”. Human activity have already been affecting coastal waters, “Natural processes and human activities along the coastlines and far inland affect the health of our ocean” (NOAA 1). The trash on land will eventually decompose and enter into water systems underground or enter runoffs, which often enter major water reservoirs like rivers and lakes. Rivers and lakes eventually enter the ocean, and along with it, the trash from your garbage can. Waste does not just include simple plastics like wrappers and water bottles, but some of them may include cleaning products that have dangerous chemicals to living organisms, “More than one-third of the shellfish-growing waters of the United States are adversely affected by coastal pollution” (NOAA 1). Areas with concentrated chemicals are threatened with death and different types of defects of the organisms. Not only is this affecting the environment and the living creatures, the damaged ecosystem can also began to have effects on the economics. Fisherman that heavily rely on the fish or shellfish population for a living can go bankrupt. The fish or shellfish they sell on the market can be contaminated by pollutants and making them inedible.
