It is clear that Canada has to change certain policies and mindsets in order to help an ever-growing portion of the population. In order to do so, it would be beneficial to take an example from Nordic European countries, where children are seen as valuable social capital and families are looked after. For example, Nordic countries spent 15-22% of GDP on family benefits in 1998, which compares strongly against Canada, which spent less than 10% of GDP (Russel, Harris & Glockel, 2008). The benefits of these actions are extremely prominent - Sweden has the lowest poverty rate among single mothers (Russel, Harris & Glockel, 2008).
