One of the strangest weather events in recent history occurred in 1816, the so called year without a summer. During this year, due to an (unknown at the time) volcanic eruption in Indonesia, temperatures in Europe were much lower than average, leading to crops failing and famine. With strange weather event occurring, it makes sense that one of the books written that year, Frankenstein, has some stranger weather of its own. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, there are several sudden storms and inhospitable climates. The harsh weather in this novel is closely related to appearances of the monster.

This concept was eminent in many works of literature, most memorable was that of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
Written during the ninteenth century, the gothic Frankensteinnovel by Marry Shelly, tells the story of a young educated student Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but fantastic creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment, which leads to different tragic events. Shelly writes about the creation of the creature and how he is first introduce to his livelihood and this world. In this novel Shelly uses different types of literary techniques to convey the expression of the creature as a baby just learning about life and the world, and by employing innovative literary techniques such as imagery, setting, theme, and characterization, she creates a feeling of sympathy on the readers. This feeling is created through Shelly establishment of pity on the readers by reavealing the creature’s loathsome creation, habitat, or even existence.
Mary Shelley took this element and incorporated it to give it a new meaning, this gave the story more deep thought and emotions to arise. The dark thunders and bright lightning flashes foreshadowed the future character development of Victor, giving him that spark of his love of science. The weather provoked thought, and revolutionized future stories to invoke on providing a new way to give a story more meaning. Future books demonstrate the way a seemingly unconventional element can play into a story, a story that emits this is the Great Gatsby. In the book Gatsby and Daisy’s reconciliations begins with pouring rain, proving awkward and sorrow; their love rekindles just as the sun begins to come out.
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, a gothic frame narrative that is told by three different narrators. It is based upon the life of Victor Frankenstein, and also includes the lives of a creature he created and a North Pole explorer Robert Walton. This source is biased in the views that the characters have of one another, but overall objective with respect to the characters because all viewpoints are given in the novel. Shelley however showed the lives of all the characters to serve as foils to one another. The actions and nature of the characters are merely gothic versions of real life actions would have been.

In her novel, Shelley uses gothic nature settings to foreshadow dark events that are about to happen in the novel. In Frankenstein, on Victor’s way home after being away for six years, a key moment in the novel that weather sets the mood is when “It echoed from Saleve, the Juras, and the Alps of Savoy; vivid flashes of light dazzled my eyes, illuminating the lake making it appear like a vast sheet of fire; then for an instant, everything seemed of pitchy darkness, until the eye recovered from the preceding flash” (Shelley 50). The author, Shelley uses weather to describe the murder of his young brother, William. Mary Shelley used an early 1800s setting in Switzerland and London to show how Victor made it through this extraordinary adventure. There were multiple themes that affected how the setting functioned in the novel. Nature, weather, and season all affect the mood of the characters. These things all have a great impact on the setting of the book.
Frankenstein: From Benevolent to Feind “I was benevolent and good; misery made me a fiend.” (Shelley 69) Said by Frankenstein’s monster, this quote truly defines him: initially an affectionate, love-seeking creature, he transformed into an enraged killer, angry at humanity for the undeservedly poor way he was treated. Victor Frankenstein is an unique, complex individual who encounters a similar change of nature for similar reasons. The quote—though spoken by the monster—encapsulates the evolution of Victor Frankenstein’s personality; misery—a product of isolation and loneliness—aroused a deterioration of temperament from an initially benevolent Frankenstein.
In Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, the idea of the natural world is recurring and helps relate many characters with nature. Victor Frankenstein, the protagonist in the novel, has a very close and unique relationship with the natural world. In Victor’s life, the idea of the sublime or the natural world comes up in emotional and significant moments. Nature changes Victor’s mood, forms his character, and shows his growth through poetic devices. In Frankenstein, nature directly affects what Victor sees and feels.
