One of the first notable lessons that I found the most useful was the assembling the employment package which included a job description, resume and cover letter. Before the class, I simply thought that the cover letter was a tedious, optional component for a job. Previously, I have avoided writing a cover letter for an internship, because I thought it was just more work and pointless. However, in class I learned that a cover letter is highly valuable component of a work application, because not only it strategically highlights the applicant’s qualifications, but also serves to complement a resume. Overall, having a lesson on writing cover letters and its emphasis on how to tailor it towards a position was extremely valuable to me. Fortunately, I now recognize that such document serves to enhance a job seekers comparative advantage. This newly acquired skill regarding the best practices for writing a cover letter is highly relevant to me, especially considering that I will be graduating in a few semesters and competing with my peers for a job in public accounting. Another take away from a cover letter is the importance of writing a hook sentence at the start of my cover letter to captivate the attention of my intended audience. This is a bit of an achilles heel of mine, because I feel as though I need to practice this aspect of professional writing.
