In Writing is a Social and Rhetorical Activity, the author, Roozen, attempts to offer a new perspective on the meaning of writing and emphasize how important it is to everyone, not only authors. Roozen claims that it is a social activity which puts the writer in contact with their own perspective(s), and that writing comes in different styles and ideas and can be intended for different audiences. Through this writing, he explains how one might go about going beyond the text and seeking a further meaning such as how “…writers draw upon many other people…” in order to accomplish their audience’s needs (Roozen, 17). Roozen often refers to the audiences, who one is writing to or for, and the purpose of writing. In the first paragraph, Roozen mentions how “writers are engaged in the work of making meaning for particular audiences and purposes, and writers are always connected to other people,” alluding to the idea that people write in all aspects of life, even if they do not realize it, and by writing they are connected (Roozen, 17). He also mentions how writing is rhetoric, in the way that we write to think, and through this writing connects people with each other and helps them to work to accomplish their needs. …show more content…

By doing so, Roozen presents the concept of writing as a way to create context and rationalize our ideas and beliefs. Finally, writing can also useful in an academic or work setting, as most classes require writing in all forms, such as papers and emails or even discussion posts. While these are the uses for writing, according to the reading, there are of course limitations. These limitations may include an informal text, as it is unusual to write formally in our day-to-day lives. However, these limitations do not overpower Roozen’s message of the importance of
