John Krakauer is an American author who is known for his many bestselling nonfiction books. Krakauer is the narrator of his book Into Thin Air, which tells the story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster that he was a part of. He chose to write this book to give a full, in-depth story of what happened that day. Not only did he want to share the story with the rest of the world, but he also used it as a way to shed light on the events in his life. Krakauer thought writing this book would help him get the traumatic event out of his mind and remove it from his life. I chose to read this book because I love adventure stories and I wanted to learn about an important event that is marked in history. Krakauer is a mountaineer who grew up in Oregon. He had been climbing since he was as young as eight with his father, and had been on many mountain trips before he climbed Mount Everest. To correctly retell the story of what happened on that day, he not only used his own personal experience, but also interviewed and researched other survivors’ stories too. Oxygen depletion up on the mountain made it hard for Krakauer to correctly remember everything that happened, so he couldn’t just rely on his own experience. He had also used things like radio logs from that day to help clarify parts of the story. I do believe that he was qualified to write the book, as he was actually there and considered learning the stories from other people’s perspectives too. Into Thin Air was written in first person by Krakauer, who tells his story on Mount Everest. His writing style is very detailed, descriptive, and raw. You can really feel his emotions in his writing. The book is very informative while also keeping you in suspense about what happened that
