Joey is a character in The Indian Wants the Bronx by Israel Horovitz. This story is a play about an Indian man who wants to be reunited to his son but these to character one which is named Joey. Joey was I kid who lived a very hard life and force to survive on the street. His best friend is Murph who gets Joey in trouble a lot and hold things over his head. Joey loves his mom and is trying to help his friend and his self for a better life. His social worker helps very little and care very little about him and Murph. Joey wanted to have a better life but doesn’t know how to get it and does not feel that anyone cares enough. When the boys get bored they decide to play a game with Gupta by hiding him, which scares this poor man to death. Murph runs off looking for Pussyface. Joey tries to reassure Gupta that things would be alright and it was just a “game” but that does not work so Joey offers his sweater to Gupta “[He removes his own sweater and offers it to the Indian] Here.Here. Put it on. [ The Indian is bewildered, but Joey forces it from his hand and begins to cover the Indian, who is amazed.] I hope I didn’t hurt you too much. You ok? [no response.]” (Beaty). Joey continues to check if the Indian (Gupta) was ok and he also apologies for his transgressions earlier. Joey start feeling guilty soon as Gupta looks up at him which make Joey immediately looks down to avoid his graze. Joey then starts to get worried about Murph and even tries to vindicate Murph’s actions to Gupta or he is reevaluating his friend Murph. “[Calls] Hey, Murphy! [laughs aloud] Murph ain’t a bad guy. He’s my best buddy, see? I mean, he gets kinda crazy sometimes, but that’s all. Everybody gets kind of crazy sometime, right? [ No Response]” (Beaty). Joey continue on talking to Gupta and even interacting with him getting him to learn how to speak English because Joey might feel that it might help Gupta get around New York city. “Murph’s my best buddy, you know? Me and him were buddies when we were kids. Me and Murph, all the time. And Maggie. His kid sister. [pauses.] I had Maggie once. Sort of. Well, kind of. Yeah, I had her. That’s right. Murph don’t know. Makes no difference now. She’s dead, Maggie.” (Beaty). Joey takes a brother role when it comes to Murph and tries to protect him yet somehow gets the blamed for the stuff that Murph does. Joey is the one who tell us about Murph’s parents and continue to tell Gupta this is the reason for Murph mental state. “That’s why Murph is crazy. That’s why he gets crazy, I mean. She died seventeen, that’s all. Seventeen just like that. Appendix. No one around. There was no around. His old lady? Forget it! The old man took off years ago. All there was really was just Murph and Maggie.” (Beaty). At the end of the skit Murph shows up and Joey goes back to treating Gupta poorly and violently though he tried to get Murph to leave Gupta alone. “Cut it out, Murph. Enough’s, enough” then he starts to worry about the police and tries to get Murph to leave the poor guy alone. Then when Murph called Prim Gupta’s son Murph snaps and start making this sometime of sick game. Murph calls Prim two time and the second time he allows for Gupta to talk to his son.
