In the book Panic, Lauren Oliver creates the character Heather Nill whose determination and bravery helps illustrate her strength and faith in herself. Heather and her other friends participate in the competition of their lifetime for the chance to win a large cash prize. Panic is the legendary game that occurs yearly in the small town of Carp, NY. Any graduating seniors are welcome to compete in the dangerous games to win the prize. Those who want to participate in panic must jump of a cliff the day after graduation, then the more challenging games begin. Panic is the opportunity of a lifetime to those who live in Carp, and everyone has their own personal reasons as to why they are competing, the question remaining is who will win. Through a series of daunting tasks, Heather risks her life and competes against her friends, Nat and Dodge, for the ultimate cash prize to help her sister. This makes them truly relatable characters to the reader. These main characters are so passionate about their cause that they are willing to risk their lives just for the chance to win and change their live forever. This trait of undying passion for their cause makes these characters very relatable to readers which allows for the characters to be more understandable. Their passion and bravery makes them vivid characters that are very realistic and seem like they could exist in real life. Oliver overall creates very realistic characters and also uses great descriptive imagery to help visualize the heart racing, life threatening events. The brutal tournament, mysterious judges, and how far the characters are willing to go to win really creates and overall amazing
