As a part of the principles of close reading one should look for common themes in a piece of literature. One way that a person could go about doing this is by writing down different topics or buzz words to identify common topics and things that are repeated throughout a passage. One can find many overlapping topics in Dante’s Inferno Cantos XXIV and XXV; some of the bigger ones include serpents, fire or the holy spirit, descending and ascending and rebirth. It is very interesting and informative to understand the kind of punishment one would have that represents the true nature of their sin, but the reader knows that this is all fictional so it can just be taken as an informative way that fits the purpose of the poem. Augustine providing actual events; the reader can apply Augustine’s experiences with sin to his or her life. Dante’s Inferno is viewed to be encyclopedic and not personal because the story holds no true events. We can make the assumption that It is the true events and experiences that make a story personal because they hold more value.

For the Greeks, much of their mythology deals with Gods, Goddesses, and the afterlife. Catholics, however, base their idea of an afterlife with three levels: Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory, a place for people who must experience a purification of sorts. Numerous Greek writers wrote about the idea of their underworld, or Hades, one of the most famous being Homer, writer of The Odyssey. The Odyssey details the hero Odysseus’ journey back to his homeland of Ithaca.

The purpose the author had in mind when he made Dante’s Inferno was to provide entertainment throughout the story. One way the author made the story entertaining was that he added action to the storyline. “Already I had twisted round my palm a length of hair, and pulled some clumps right out” is one part in the story that contains action(Dante 281.102-103). Another way the author could provide entertainment could be the use of suspense for his readers. “ Who first opposed it, all now turned their eyes to the other shore” is a good example of suspense because the people do not know what’s coming next(Dante 183.116-117).

These themes encompass the philosophical and religious ideas that can be found in both texts. Although Dante’s: Inferno is written on the base of Catholicism and One Thousand and One Nights is written on the base of Islam, the views we are presented with in both are not unique , but rather found in one form or another throughout history and in various cultures spread across the world.

The book "Inferno", which is the Italian translation for Hell, tells the journey of its author through what he believes is Hell, which consists of nine circles of pain and suffering. In his journey, he is guided through the nine circles by the Roman poet Virgil. Each circle in the book represents a different type of sin with a different type of punishment, varying according to the degree of the offense they committed in their life. By the end of his journey through all of the circles, Dante realizes and emphasizes the perfection of God's Justice and the significance of each offense towards God’s unconditional love.
Inferno begins by following Dante as he falls from his path of moral truth. Sin has obstructed his path to God. We never know what type of sin Dante has committed, this is not important, he has simply strayed from the straight path. Because the hero of the Inferno is also the writer, we have to look at both aspects of him, Dante the author and Dante the character. Dante the character, well to be blunt, he is a bit of a weenie.
