During the years 1863 and 1973, the government played different roles in the US military. The US president implanted many laws to get the military to train men faster for periods of declared and undeclared war. Victoria Bryant Stewart, “The United States Congress voted upon the Selective Service Act.” The Selective Service Act was changed the law of registering men into the military, making men responsible to register themselves. In addition, the Selective Training Act of 1940 was declared to make it less difficult to persuade men into the military.
Throughout 1916 the Americans held fast to the hope of not becoming involved in the war. However, there hopes slowly started to fade as they began to realize that the war was going to happen. Not only did Woodrow Wilson believe that the war was the answer to America’s problem, he also expected Americans to jump into supporting the war. When American’s disagreed with the war, the government began to forcefully make them agree.
When President Wilson requested that Congress declare war on Germany, America was not ready to mobilize our troops for war. The United States had just begun to pull itself out of recession and were not ready for a war economically. Some Americans wanted to see the fall of Germany, but did not support sending our soldiers across the ocean. Despite all this, Wilson continued to push for American contribution in the war effort. Eventually, Wilson’s tactics won over and we were able to send large amounts of reinforcements into the war.
An independent government agency known as The Committee on Public Information was formed as a way to influence the public’s opinion which they did by using propaganda. There are many different forms of propaganda and many of them were used in WWI which author Joseph Joe Kaminski further discusses in “World War I and Propaganda Poster Art: Comparing The United States and German Class”. The answer to getting the public’s attention was by using different tactics to intrigue citizens; “The use of propaganda art was essential in galvanizing opinions and reshaping ideas during WWI” (Kaminksi, 2).
A society should be aware of its government and how far the government will go to protect them. A society should know what role they will play in their own protection, and what they will stand for in the name of freedom and safety. A society should not go too far in sacrificing one 's freedom for safety. A person should be able to live their own life without the government stepping in and approving/disapproving of everything.

One variable that echoed throughout America was propaganda. Propaganda was a major influence in the rally for overall support in America during World War II. The propaganda’s intentions in World War II can be broken down into three major categories: war efforts, Anti-German and Anti-Japanese backing, and homefront endeavors.
America treaded the path towards World War II with trepidation, until its people were convinced that action must be taken when the incident of Pearl Harbor occurred. From that point on, American citizens began mobilizing to aid their nation in hopes for victory against the Axis Powers. In order to keep up morale certain measures, such as the use of false advertising, were imposed. The influence of American propaganda during World War II led to an exploration of government authority through the use of censorship, exploitation of women, and incentive to contribute to the war effort.

On April 2, in 1917, Woodrow Wilson delivered his speech, “War Message.” Woodrow Wilson delivered this speech four days before he made a life changing decision to enter into WWI. Woodrow Wilson urged for neutrality, but the United States was preparing for their involvement in the war by strengthening the Navy. Woodrow Wilson was the 28th president of the United States during this moment of major decision making.
The stand out topics in the course was World War I and World War II. These were stand out topics for me because these are my favorite periods of history. I found the propaganda presented throughout the course to be interesting. I found it interesting because there was always a clear bias for a specific person or idea in each image or video. Plus, the people were easily tricked by the images.
“To be a leader means to be able to move masses” (Adolf Hitler). The quote epitomizes both the Nazi party in Germany and the World State in the novel ‘Brave New World’. The Nazi’s and World state exercised propaganda to gain dictatorship and control over their people. It is not difficult for one man or society to dictate millions with the help of advanced technology and propaganda techniques. The propaganda techniques like card stacking, glittering generalities, and plain folks are used in the propaganda of the Nazi party(Adolf Hitler) and the World State .
in Australia, the war was promoted very biased with all the media surrounding the war being pleasant and heavily censored so that more people would be more inclined to join the war. Some attitudes to the war were not so great with some people saying it was not Australia’s war and an Irish stereotype was that they did not want to fight a ‘British War’. This was demonstrated in the film when Frank’s Irish father said: “it’s not our bloody war”. It was widely thought that World War One would demonstrate Australia’s value to Britain, which would lead to further support militarily and other help. This is why Australia was so eager to promote the war volunteering 50,000 troops to Great Britain.

Propaganda is a very manipulative method of controlling the audience's attitudes. In the novel 1984, by George Orwell, Winston Smith is a member of the outer party in the nation of Oceania. Winston, along with all the other citizens of Oceania, are constantly being watched by the Party through telescreens. Oceania is ruled by an omniscient leader only known as Big Brother, a powerful faceless figure who is feared by all of Oceania.
Usually, people supported the war because propaganda allowed them to believe that war was worth fighting for. Some examples include: convincing people to go to war, unification of the nation, conserving food, buying bonds, and more.
Patriotic organizations (as the Central Committee for National Patriotic Organizations) and nationalists views help establish a propaganda machine that twist the real image of war. Even before the war broke out in 1914, many people saw the conflict with Germany inevitable considering the vast amounts of pro-war propaganda circulated by the government, the press private patriotic organizations, and even popular British authors. Its purpose was to "build up the image of national and allied leaders as the embodiment of courage, heroism, and resolution, while the enemy leaders become the embodiment of evil and the scapegoats for the war." To the British, it was their duty to fight against Germany; it was a just cause that should be
War is a complicated, there are numerous factors that affect the outcome of the war and one key factor is how the soldiers themselves feel about what they are fighting for and if they think all the death and destruction is really worth it. This is where media and propaganda in such a vital part of controlling the masses and having a strong mass mobilization that is ready for war. All media is used during war to convince the public that they need to fight and this idea is used in numerous ways. The location or country fighting does not affect this idea either, using propaganda to control the masses is used from the free states of the Americas to the dystopian government controlled nation of North Korea. The outcome of a war is determined by
