I. Introduction Parenthood, a drama television series, attends to the adversity of an extended and imperfect family. The Bravermans are a blended California family who face a series of both fortunate and unfortunate events but together find a way to get by (Katims, 2010). Television consumers have been introduced to many fictional families overtime and continue to fall in love with family related television shows. Historically, the media has transformed and continues to adapt to the changes in present day family types. “Writers often take seeds from real life experiences and plant then in their scripts,” consumers both consciously or subconsciously attend to cues on television and want to apply what they see to their lives.
Television situational comedies have the ability to represent different values or concerns of their audience, these values often change every decade or so to reflect and highlight the changes that the audience is experiencing within society, at the time of production. Between the years of 1950 and 2010, the representation of gender roles and family structure has been addressed and featured in various sitcoms, such as “Father Knows Best” and “Modern Family”, through the use of narrative conventions, symbolic, audio and technical codes. These representations have transformed over time to reflect the changes in social, political, and historical contexts. The 1950’s sitcom “Father Knows Best” traditionally represents the values of gender roles and family structure in a 1950’society, with the father, held high as the breadwinner of the family and the mother as the sole homemaker.

Now with Modern Family, we are introduced to the whole new world of technology everybody feeds off of. With this TV show, slang is a big part of it. Phil tries to act “hip” and “cool” around his kids. Different beliefs are shared throughout the show as well. Cam and his husband are a newly married gay couple.
Simply put, Pop Culture has changed the way family is seen. Many times what we se on television is breakdown of family structure and misrepresentation family life on display. We see this everywhere we look and on primetime shows. Shows such as Modern family, Dr. Phil, reality television and more. In most cases there is a specific agenda being forced on everyone when we watch television.
Modern Family: Progressive… with a side of stereotypes With over 20 Emmy wins Modern Family has proven to be a brilliant television show. This show enjoyed by millions, shows an accurate representation of American social values including those of gender, marriage; however, in doing so creates and reinforces many stereotypes commonly used today. By airing the lives of three very different families on Modern Family, the producers are able to show different ambience of each family, however in these families, many gender and racial stereotypes exist. The three families include: Phil and Claire Dunphy with their three kids, Haley, Alex, and Luke; Jay and Gloria Pritchett-Delgado with two sons, Manny and Joe; and Mitchell and Cameron Tucker-Pritchett
Family theories have been used throughout the history of nursing to help guide patient care and provide the best patient outcomes. Certain theories may be more applicable to the specific patient encounter; however, each theory has benefits and drawbacks to their use. Modern Family is a popular primetime television show that airs Wednesday nights on ABC. This hit comedy presents the daily lifestyles of three separate but related families who reside in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California. The Dunphys are shown as the traditional white American family while the Pritchett-Tucker family are a homosexual couple with an adopted daughter named Lily. The Pritchetts are the last family who are an interracial couple with a large age gap. On the surface, this show seems to be one of the most diverse on television.
According to Dr. Christopher E. Sunday, theory is a model or framework of observation and understanding, which shapes both what people see and how they see it. Theory also is a set of of interrelated ideas, definitions, and prediction about events or situations by specifying relations among the variables. Scholar defined it as a set of ideas about why the problem exists and solution in orderto solve the problem that can created. As opposed to “nuclear family” “No longer does the traditional family consist of two parents and two children; instead, more diverse and shifting family structures are becoming the norm.
This essay discusses how the family is viewed by two different sociological perspectives- functionalism and conflict theory. Firstly, ‘family’ is defined. Secondly, the main ideas of functionalism will be discussed followed by how this theory perceives the family. The main ideas of Conflict Theory will then be examined and how conflict theorists perceive the family.
Despite the creator’s of Modern Family effort to portray a progressive view of American families, the show still accentuates outdated female stereotypes and gender roles; reinforcing gender characteristics, patriarchy and hegemonic masculinity. In contrast to its title, Modern Family promotes traditional gender roles and stereotypes of women, which result in the portrayal of an inaccurate image of the female, and weakens the stance of women in today’s U.S. society. Gender stereotypes are prevalent throughout the Modern Family; the women are all portrayed as wives and mothers, promoting a continued male dominant family ideology. Claire and Gloria are throughout the show acting on our society’s “assumptions about women’s ‘appropriate’ roles” (Dow 19).
I believe that every family has their own roots, essence, uniqueness, beliefs and thoughts, some families have both parents, some just the mother, just the father, two mothers or two fathers, they might have an only child or two, or maybe 5 or even 10, therefore, those children start learning all these things from their family and surroundings, they ask questions, they imitate each other’s actions and are constantly learning and trying to catch as much information and experiences as possible. Children are growing fast, their parents are their role models, they learn mostly from them; parents have the tremendous job of forming good citizens that provide to society, healthy and happy beings that keep growing as humans in every stage of their
