Music is the voice of the alluring soul and captivating sound of the heart. Music has a way of articulating feelings and emotions through a vast variety of sounds, words, and instruments. Choice in music is personalized, and no two individuals enjoy all of the same music because we all differ in some way. For example, I was born in College Park, Georgia, in a majority Black neighborhood to my mother and two brothers. I am a twenty-year-old college student that identifies as a Black American male because my ancestor are ascendants of slavery. As I reflect on my choice in music, I discovered how my life experiences, family history, location, and social circle influenced my selection.
The strongest influence on my musical preference is my family and out very interesting history. My mom was raised in a very urban part of Atlanta, she watched both of her parents be addicted to drugs and even witnessed her own brother be shot to death. I became a huge fan of alternative rock my Sophomore year of high school. I always heard the stereotypes that “rock was only for white people” however, once I listen to it, I realized what I was missing out on and became instantly hooked. I really appreciated the organic sound of the instruments, the eerie vibes and subliminal messages that it the music contain. I have been to many rock concerts and had the opportunity to meet my favorite Alternative rock artist. listening to Alternative Rock has shown me that stepping outside my comfort zone could be something amazing. Stereotypes are against us and they ultimately limit us, but is our job to not allow those stereotypes to control our lives.
