In source one, Ziauddin Sardar is discussing how the way someone lives describes their identity. He is stating that knowing your own identity is a journey of it’s own, but once you know who you are then you can start realizing and understanding other people’s identities. Coming into contact with other people can change an individual’s views on the world because everyone has their own sense of personal identity and they might persuade you to become more like them or their beliefs might be more suitable. There are many factors of shaping one’s identity some of them being: where someone is born, what school an individual goes to and even doing daily duties molds identity. If someone is stripped of their identity then the whole foundation of their life starts to crumble because they become lost. An example of this is how the European settlers came to Canada and started assimilating the First Nation peoples, the loss of personal identity caused many of them to become dysfunctional due to the fact that they were forced to change their beliefs. Without personal identity steering the way a person lives they can become confused and not contribute to their society because they lost their sense of belonging.

Identity is the backbone of nationalism because as soon as someone supports that nation or group they become a part of that desired nation. Showing pride in that group demonstrates that person's identity and beliefs,an example of this is how Canada always encourages their sports teams in the olympics without using force or bringing down other nation’s too badly. Ultranationalism occurs when the nation takes it too far and begins to kill people or complete actions that are not deemed socially acceptable.
