In the short story “A Man Called Horse” by Dorothy M. Johnson, a white man is bitterly discontent with his life in Boston. He decides to leave his gracious old Boston home to find his “equals” in life. When he leaves the frontier, he hires some companions to help him on his journey. On his journey he gets captured by a Crow Indian raiding party. He must go through the rigorous task of gaining his status after he is captured. The physical, social, and cultural aspects of setting influence the white man’s life. As the white man’s physical setting changes, he learns what he has to do to survive.
