Innovation and Lightbulbs In the mid-1800s, candles and gas lamps were the primary light source once the sun went down. One man decided he would attempt to change society in a way that would only prove to be beneficial. Using electricity and ingenuity, Thomas Edison invented the lightbulb which set a precedent for more technological advancements in the future. Edison created a Lightbulb company that led to the growth of businesses across the United States and world. This fundamental idea of innovation and business is the reason we are able to live in our society at the standards we require. One may have had to go outside to gather a bucket of water to shower or to cook but, thanks to innovation, people have running water. The system of plumbing and running water are advances that have allowed for one to live wherever they choose. Many choose to live in large urban cities which, without running water, would not be possible. The creation of cities can be attributed solely to corporations and innovators who researched and output products that soon become necessities of living. Without electricity, and the lightbulb, large cities would not be possible because they are the basis of all functions. As the population grew, more spaces for houses and businesses to support the people were needed. The amount of space one could use was limited and became a rising issue. Walt Disney once said, “I don't believe there's a challenge anywhere in the world that's more important to people everywhere than finding solutions to the problems of our communities” (Godwin).These solutions included cars and high-rise buildings, which fed the demand of expansion and progress.
