Hassan’s rape is the first great piece of conflict which appears in the novel, and the most important piece of irony as well, with important recurring consequences throughout the story. First and foremost, the event of Hassan’s rape, negatively affects the relationship Amir and Hassan have, due to Amir’s cowardness and Hassan’s awareness of what he did, making them start to drift apart. “Hassan kept trying to rekindle things between [them],” however, Amir pushes him further away at every attempt, from the torturing guilt of what he has done. Amir feels “sorry” for his cowardly reaction at seeing Hassan’s sexual abuse, and only wishes to be freed from his guilt.
