An event that takes place in the world can be described from various angles. Particularly newspapers apply this in order to follow their respective agendas. This Extended Essay will examine how two Israeli newspapers report about violence, particularly aiming to answer the research question: How does the portrayal of two violent acts that occurred in 2014 as part of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict vary between Haaretz and The Jerusalem Post?. Haaretz considers itself to be a Zionist left wing newspaper, while The Jerusalem Post is orientated more towards the center, however, some agencies argue that it leans towards the political right. Multiple newspapers discuss the same event, however, depending on how certain aspects are put, a different image can be created (Cf. Kosicki, G., Maxwell McCombs, 2004). This “coloured” portrayal may lead to more intense reactions, splitting parties further apart. This will be seen when analysing some sample articles below, where the viewpoints of an Israeli and a Palestinian further highlight the differences rather than embrace the similarities. It can be avoided by informing more readers about the twist that information receives in order to follow newspapers’ agendas. This is of particular importance in a region of conflict, such as the Middle East, where conflict is an ongoing topic to discuss. The two newspapers that will be compared are not only influential within the country, but also greatly target international readers. This shapes the view of many more readers and influences the way the outside world views current events and the region as a whole.
