“There are more African-American men in prison, jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850” (Arene-Morley). Racism in present day America is harder to see than previous periods because the most apparent and obvious forms of racial discrimination such as slavery or segregation have been eliminated. Nonetheless, racism effects the political, economic, and sociocultural structures of America in ways that cause separation between people of color and whites. Race constantly affects the way we are seen in society and controls our actions. Racism leads to ostracizing, bullying, and even violence.
Purpose: The purpose of the documentary is to help understand racism and how it has evolved through slavery. Racism is caused by the fear and uneasy that is caused on a group of people. Europeans/Whites believed that they were of a superior white race. Message: Racism is evolved through the ignorance and assumptions of individuals, inequality leads to racism as well.
Although racism has improved over the years, many African Americans face racial discrimination daily. Slavery has always been a prominent part of history in America and still has effects on today's society. Today, African Americans are still treated differently because of their skin color. Being treated differently because of their skin color is so immoral and unfair. This treatment has to do with the strong roots of racism that stem in the United States.
The United States, born of oppression, has grown a cancer that imitates the very subjugation that the country was birthed from. Racism in America is a lingering narrative that has extended itself to the modern era. The Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s appeared to be the zenith of black suffrage; racism seeming to reach a resolution were. However, racism towards the black community is still seen in the 21st century, shown by the rise of police brutality seemingly targeted towards the black community and the Black Lives Matter movement. Racism in America still perseveres after the Civil Rights movement, shown by the unremitting discrimination of black men and women.
Racism has been a longstanding controversial issue since around the 1700’s. We as a nation have tried to fix this problem in 1865 when slavery was abolished which like many other laws took time. Then in 1954 when segregation was declared unconstitutional in the case of brown vs. board of education. It’s 2015 and the problem is not as bad as it uses to be back then, but it’s still a problem. It 's become a norm now for the blacks to be struggling in schools, paying their bills and to fit in.
Racism is still exiting and it is a major problem in our modern society today. The system was set up to suppress black people, make them feel less of themselves, and separation from another because they look harmful or suspicious to them. In modern society, American moral and values define freedom, but the foundation was built by slavery which sound confusing and complicated. The history of slavery had collided contemporary society today, also created a group of two societies. The majority of American might argue that they should not be held accountable of their ancestor actions, which make perfect sense, but also needs to understand the system was created against minority groups.
Because media is full of racist propaganda, racism is a relevant problem in today’s society. Media does not represent race in a proper way; it is based on opinions, it negatively influences our society in regards to the outlook on race, and it groups races into unfair categories. Until the media discontinues the inaccurate portrayal of race, society will continue to have an uninformed view of race that ultimately leads to racism. ‘What we know- what we have seen- is that America can change…what we have already achieved, gives us hope.. for what we can and must achieve tomorrow” (Obama). It is true that society has come a long way in regards to racism, but it has not yet come far enough.
They want everyone to believe that racism doesn't exist anymore. They want everyone to think that America is the land of the free and home of the brave. People across this country and the world seems to think that it's all in the past. They say we progress from the early years of America and reached well above the limitation set by the establishment. But yet, are we treated fairly by the system?
Numerous amount, of people nowadays are still continuing this as a joke. Racism is really offensive and is just like being bullied, that’s why we need to stop racism in America. In my point of view, the only way to stop racism is for the president to pass a law that has a severe punishment. Multiple people have tried to stop racism by explaining that we’re all equal, and that there is no segregation between each other, but as a result after all those examples and explanation most people are still judging other considering their race.
There is no doubt the scourge of racism is a black eye for the beacon of hope and light, which the US is supposed to represent. For far too long most of our citizens have been complacent with the status quo. Racism has grown as part of the very fabric of this country. Ideas of race and ideologies of superiority were state sponsored and fundamental to history and structure of the United States. From the slave trade, voter suppression, lynching, segregation, and human rights violations, the list is long and dirty of the atrocities minorities have endured while under the thumb of the US government.
Racism in the United States has always been a big problem. The confrontations I learned about in school were the more notable ‘blacks v whites’. In Texas though, racism against Hispanics was common. The location of Texas and the fact that Texas used to be part of Mexico led to a large population of Mexican-Americans. The League of United Latin American Citizens was created to off-set some of the discrimination that Hispanics in the United States endured.

Although African-Americans were freed from slavery in the 1860’s, discrimination continues to be seen today. Racism is defined as prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one 's own race is superior. The white supremacy woven into mainstream American culture led to the continued widespread exclusion of African-Americans.

People didn’t care if they were racist and they didn’t care if they abused slaves and hated on people for their color and it’s been that way for years on years but did we notice it back then or did we just notice how bad it was the past few years, Slavery was supposed to stop after the 13th amendment, but it’s still a problem and it hasn’t decreased it has increased over the decade. About 21 million people are enslaved today and it will continue to grow if nobody tries to stop it.
