After reading “A Good Man is Hard to Find,” I was inspired to do more research on Flannery O’Connor. The two short stories we have had to read in the past week, have been my first encounter with her works. I was aware that she was a Christian writer, so I was not surprised when I saw that we would be reading her. However, she has surprised me quite a bit through her writing. I found it interesting that O’Connor spent much of her life in Georgia.
Flannery O’Connor’s Good Country People is a short story mostly centralized around a thirty-two year old woman named Joy. Joy works alongside her mother Mrs. Hopewell who owns a farm out in the boondocks of Georgia. Joy has a wooden leg due to a childhood accident. Joy has a strong belief in atheism and holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Due to the depressing life that Joy lives she finds that her name does not suit her characteristics whatsoever, she goes so far as to change her name to “Hulga”, a rather ugly name that her mother does not find very suitable.
The dad, aunt and grandpa all went off while the grandma took care of the kids. They didn't have it easy, but they had there neighbors to fall back on. It says in the text "Lots of women acted like my mother, bossing me, feeding me. Many would hold me on their laps and tell me stories about High John the Conqueror or John Henry. Some felt no shame about whipping out a comb and fixing my hair when they thought I looked too raggedy".
In the 1953 short story titled “A Good Man is Hard to Find” by Flannery O’Connor, readers are given a glimpse of what the end of the story may look like through use of foreshadowing, symbolism, and other literary techniques. Although the story looks to be an innocent story of a family who travels to Florida for vacation at the start of it, readers soon find out that the story has a darker twist to it. This family trip turns violent and this gruesome ending can easily represent the violence taking place in America during the time this story was written by O’Connor and even today. Judgment “A Good Man is Hard to Find” By Flannery O'Connor is about a family that goes on a trip; along with the family the grandmother tags along and causes things to get off track and gets the family into trouble. O'Connor was born in the 1900sin Savannah, Georgia. O'Connor was a catholic woman with grace. In the story, “A Good Man is Hard to Find” O'Connor portrays the grandmother in the story to be extremely judgmental toward people who she doesn’t believe have the same morals or mind set she does. The grandmother judges the children’s mother way of dressing in comparison to herself and how she carries herself.
Both of these stories use the theme of isolation, madness, symbolism and have an ironic ending.
These events are easily found in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" because the violence takes place casually at the end of the story, the murderer doesn 't try to be sneaky about it. At the beginning of the story the grandmother talks the family into visiting east Tennessee and not Florida by telling them that a dangerous inmate named "The Misfit" had escaped and is headed to Florida; "The Misfit is aloose from the federal Pen headed toward Florida and you read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it. I wouldn 't take my children in any direction with a criminal like that aloose in it. I couldn 't answer to my conscience if it did."
