Experiences, they are what shape a person’s understandings. But those experiences can also shape misunderstandings. Often when people have misunderstandings, they may lead to conflicts. In Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club, she shows the misunderstandings and conflicts between mothers and daughters. One of the mothers is Suyaun and the daughter is Jing-Mei. They both go through conflicts and misunderstandings of one another. The conflict between Suyaun and Jing-Mei is that they are both from different cultures and have different experiences. So when Suyaun and Jing-Mei had a disagreement, it would turn into conflicts. Especially Jing-Mei because she was having the harder time understanding her mother, until after Suyuan’s death. For example, when Jing-Mei is on her way to China, she starts to feel her DNA changing and recalls her mother saying she will unlock her Chinese-self some day. As Jing-Mei describes, “And I think, my mother was right. I am becoming Chinese” (Tan 304). This shows that Jing-Mei is beginning to come to an understanding with her mother. As she is going to China, she realizes that her mother was always right about her becoming Chinese. Another example, is when Jing-Mei finds out what her name meant and thinks about how disappointed her mother must have been, thinking that she had failed to be the essence. As Jing-Mei says, “I think about this. My mother’s long-cherished wish. Me, the younger sister who was supposed to be the essence of others. I feed myself with the old grief, wondering how disappointed my mother must have been” (Tan 321). This shows how sad Jing-Mei was to understand her mother’s expectations and wishes, and sad by the fact that she, for the most of her life, had disobeyed her mother, and thinking that she had, so far, failed in fulfilling her mother’s wish.
