Sherry Huang Mrs. Clark U.S History(Honors) 1B December 3, 2014 The Killer Angels Book Report The Killer Angels, is a novel written by Michael Shaara which originally published in 1974. The novel is base on the battle of Gettysburg which is the bloodiest battle in the United States. The author chronologically narrates the battle, instead of standing a viewpoint that is knowing everything in the battle. The description of the battle makes reader to be personally on the scene.The book describes the battle from both sides of the war, the Union and Confederacy. The author uses the views of several generals from both sides to elaborate the three days battle. This narrative form makes the book unique, and valuable. Stuart, supports to send the information about the enemy, is out of touch for several days, spy Harrison sends a messages that he has seen the union army to General Longstreet who is the right arm for General Lee since Stonewall Jackson died from the battle of Chancellorsville. It implies that the background of a person is important than everything in the southern society, even though Harrison is desperate to prove his work ability, he still cannot admit by the generals. Fremantle, a British observer who follows the southern troops, represents an important role in battle that represents the view as a foreigner. Also, he gives Confederate information how European thinks about the war which is indirect telling them the north’s view of the cause of the war, in addition, the south and north do not realize the cause of the war at this point, the south fights for the state rights which is glory for them, the north is fights over the issue of slavery. One of those general who name Garnett, he is the an example to show the southern society puts high value on the honor. He dishonor by Jackson, and because of Jackson’s accident dead he cannot regain the honor. Later on, he tries several times to die in the battle that he can renew his honor. In addition, the general is respected by more people who from Virginia than who does not from Virginia. On the other hand, Longstreet starts to think over Harrison’s words, and realize the Union is coming, he tries to tell Lee, but the assistant denied.
