The book first copyrighted in 1974 by Michael Shaara is “The Killer Angels”. This book is a historical fiction book and takes place in Gettysburg in 1863. The story starts on June 29, 1863, the four main characters that we see the most are General Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant General James Longstreet, Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, and Major General John Buford. The book changes it’s point of views between these four men to get different perspectives of what is going on from June 29th to July 3rd of 1863. It all starts with a spy showing up and informing Longstreet that he saw the Union army moving nearby, this information shocked him because General Stuart was supposed to be on the lookout for the Union. With the troops of the Union and Confederate army both in Gettysburg the fight begins, on the first day the Union retreats into nearby hills and Buford is blamed for what happened that day. The Confederate army wants to attack both of the Unions flanks to weaken them in spite of what Longstreet wants. They compromise and Longstreet agrees to attack the left side and the result is a complete bloodbath on both sides of the flank. Chamberlain finally makes it to Gettysburg with his regiment and is told that he is not allowed to retreat and will attack no matter what. July 3rd Chamberlain and his men move to the middle of both Union flanks. Longstreet still wants to move the army to D.C. but Lee still refuses. They plan an attack on the Union army but it doesn’t do much harm to them because of the artillery shooting too high. So many soldiers are shoot and blown apart from artillery and 51,000 people died during this war, everybody knew that they were most likely not going to make it out alive and they all learned to deal with it. Another major theme is division among the nation because it was a fight between the north and the south of the United States. Both sides had to make themselves think that the other side was filled of people that were less than human like if they were fighting a different country or something because if not they probably wouldn’t be able to handle this war.
