The Kite Runner How does Khaled Hosseini examine Afghanistan’s History of conflict and explore its effect in the novel, The Kite Runner? Khaled Hosseini, the author of The Kite Runner, uses central themes such as violence and rape, society, class and power, as well as redemption to examine the effects of conflict in Afghanistan’s History. Through each of the themes, Hosseini explores many prominent literary techniques including, irony, foreshadowing, and to allude to the conflict in Afghanistan. Through exploration of Afghanistan’s history of conflict, Khaled Hosseini demonstrates the effects with the use of violence and rape as a theme and further provides evidence with using techniques such as irony, foreshadowing and imagery. Hosseini uses point of view to allow readers to feel a more involved in the story and to get the perspective of an Afghani. Through the eyes of Amir, the protagonist, as a reflective adult, we can hear of the psychological experiences that he has faced in the story and gain an understanding from his point of view. For instance this quote “But he’s not my friend. He’s my servant!...I treated Hassan well, just like a friend, better, even more like brothers… Why did I play with Hassan when no one was around.” (Pg.38), gives us an insight into the roles that class plays in society and the relationship between Amir a Pashtun and Hassan a Hazara. The contrast in setting between the US and Afghanistan allows the readers to compare the two vastly different cultures that are encountered in the novel. For example, the “Soldier wanted half an hour with the lady in the back of the truck… it’s his price for letting us pass… War doesn’t negate decency. It demands it, even more than in times of peace.” (Pg.106) gives readers a look into the revolting and destructive acts that power plays in Afghanistan.
